Meet Sherronda Scoggins of KC Events & Florals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherronda Scoggins.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sherronda. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I always say this business found me. I use to decorate for my church for free to help out. One of the ladies who’s kids where in elementary and middle school would always say “when my kids get married I will call you” I was thinking, sure you will. When her daughter was finishing Medical school, she called and asked me to do her wedding.

Two weddings in one weekend. A traditional Nigerian ceremony and an American ceremony. Two weeks after I agreed, I found out I was pregnant after six years of trying and went on bed rest. I meet with her and vendors on days I had schedule doctors appointments, I did a ton of research just because I wanted to give my all. A few weeks before her wedding I gave birth to my daughter who after seven hours passed away. I pulled myself together and did her wedding and didn’t think twice about starting a business.

A few months later, I got a referral to do a wedding in Dallas, and I declined, but the bride begged. Her family was here, and she was alone in Dallas. I agreed, and that was supposed to be it. One referral came after the next. I was still grieving, but I have always loved flowers. Fourteen years and seven kids later I still love what I do! That’s the short version of it!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not a smooth road at all. For a while, I focused more on corporate planning and event design and decor. I worked from home for years and just before the Oil & Gas industry took a hit I had to decide to move into an office-warehouse space.

I had been looking for a year and couldn’t find anything in my budget and the size I needed. I prayed and told God there is nothing out there in my budget for the size I need to hold all my stuff. I told him what I could afford and decided if He wanted to put me in a space, He would.

A few months later, I got a call from a company I had called months before offering a space. It was exactly what I had said I could afford and a perfect location to get to all my downtown clients. The Friday before I was supposed to sign my lease I got calls losing my corporate contacts.

The Oil & Gas industry was doing major layoffs, so Florals and parties were the first to go. So with no monthly income coming in, I made the decision to step out on faith and sign the contract anyway. I only had the deposit and the 1st months rent and no events lined up.

One event after the other came in to pay each month’s rent. But I could pay myself or a team Then a fellow florist had to make a sudden move to Florida and literally handed me her floral business, and I went from being an event Florist with some weekly contracts to a daily florist doing same day deliveries.

KC Events & Florals – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
KC Events is a full-service event design, floral and rental company. We specialize in Florals and decor. We are known for our hotel Lobby Floral Designs found in the Hilton Americas Downtown.

We are most proud of the care of our flowers. Customers constantly call and send us pictures of flowers they have had for two weeks or more that still look beautiful.

We believe that our attention to detail and our belief that we are a servant to all sets us apart from others.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define successes as the ability to do what I love day in and day out while others pay me to do it when in reality I would do it anyway for free!
