Meet Shirley Thomas of Sweets & Treats by Shirls in East Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Thomas.

Shirley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am the owner and operator of Sweets & Treats by Shirls. I specialize in various flavors of decorated cookies, cakes, and other treats.

My love for baking began from the time I was five years old, baking with my siblings, for family, friends, and my parent’s co-workers. Any family event or friend’s birthday, I would always bake a cake or cookies of some sort. I began my business three years ago after working for many years as an Oncology Registered Nurse.

Baking was always a hobby of mine, along with my passion for art, so my business is a perfect blend of both. Decorating sweet treats allows me to create edible works of art, which also not only aesthetically pleasing but also tastes good.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As with any business, it is not always smooth. I definitely can say I had humble beginnings and am learning along the way. I learned a lot from trial and error, online tips and tutorials, and a lot of hands-on practice. Growth is a gradual process and it is important to always see how far you have come and continue to strive to do better.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sweets & Treats by Shirls story. Tell us more about the business.
Sweets & Treats by Shirls offers a variety of flavors of custom, decorated sugar cookies, cakes, cupcakes, and other treats. I am the sole owner and am self-taught. What I am most proud about as a company is being able to create personalized edible treats that combine the vision of my client and also allows me to put my twist on it. What sets me apart from others is my customer service and creating sweets for my clients in the same level of care as I would for my own family and friends.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would have to call it blessings rather than luck. Everything happens for a reason and in its season, so I believe that with faith, hard work, learning from past mistakes and a positive outlook, I count every triumph and failure as opportunities for growth and consider them blessings in disguise.
