Meet Saima Khan of SK Modern Art in Sugar Land

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saima Khan.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Abstract painting has given me a way to express myself, my joys, my dreams, and sometimes my sorrows. Art is a way of expression, and I strive to portray a different emotion with every piece I create. My fan base is a wonderful mixture of all kinds of people from all over the world. For my Muslim supporters who are familiar with the beautiful history and different style of Arabic calligraphy, I strive to capture the important lessons and messages of the Quran.

For my supporters who belong to different religions, I incorporate something that represents their individual values.  I take pride in blending traditional themes with my modern style of art creating a truly unique and unforgettable piece for every single one of my clients to a better life. All too often when we are stressed out, we don’t listen to our soul. Art is a way to connect with your inner self.  Art will set your spirit free. You will be surprised to see the result.

My source of inspiration is my Aunt Carla. She encouraged me to be independent and to follow my passion at an early age and continues to do so for the last 35 years.“ (The personal picture I send is me and my aunt Carla)

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Although I only have been actively creating custom art for the past several years, it has always spoken to the core of my being. I did feel its language and had a natural ability of translating colors into feelings. This connection between my art and my emotions has gotten stronger as I have become more involved in painting.

Whenever I see an empty space, a blank wall, or a lonely person I can sense emotion, attention, or rejection. I myself was rejected and labeled a failure. When I encountered major challenges in life I expressed my silent screams with abstract paintings and gave my emotions colors. I am so thankful that I am now able to share my passion and use my talents to enrich others’ lives.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a Houston based Artist and my passion is abstract art and Islamic calligraphy. I love making canvas artwork with modern themes. My work also includes large, custom paintings that fit my clients’ desired themes and colors. I have non-stop ideas and a creative mind. I had sold over hundreds of painting all over nationwide and international.

I also had a successful Solo Exhibitions in Houston downtown and had my paintings displayed in larges skyscraper building of Houston Downtown, Mosque, Resturant, Homes, Office, and many other Commercial places. I’m actively involved in many fundraising programs for charity events and Donates 20% from each Sale.

What were you like growing up?
From the time when I was very young, I have been attracted to drawing and calligraphy. When I look now through old textbooks and notes, I see they are filled with designs. This love for the visual arts forced me to change from my profession of Sonographer to becoming an artist who enjoys various ways of expression ranging from henna art to clothing design to painting.  In addition, I also enjoy teaching others.

Art is not bound to age (or religion). Anyone can learn to express feelings through painting or calligraphy and the process can be very therapeutic. Sharing this enjoyment and therapy is what I hope to accomplish in my classes, of course, along with making my clients happy by having my paintings in their homes.
