Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Warren.
Skye, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My background is in Computer Science. I went to UT Austin and worked in the Houston oil and gas industry for my first few years back. I loved some things about the work, but when my son was born, I knew I needed a change–with both my work schedule and to stretch my creative muscles.
I started writing without really knowing it could support my family. I already loved romance, the inherent hope of it, the heroine-centric journeys, the focus on both sexual and intellectual empowerment. So writing romance came naturally to me. I wrote the book that I wanted to read, the small gap in what I could find and what should be represented.
That principle has guided me through many years and thirty novels, as I’ve built this small burning passion into a career. Over time, I’ve had books hit the New York Times and USA Today bestseller’s list. I’ve sold over one million books and had books translated into multiple languages. I love my readers, but at the end of the day, it’s really about what book I need to write for myself.
Has it been a smooth road?
It happened a few years into my journey when I was already working full time as an author. I went from being a person who could never take a nap, constantly working, always busy, to sleeping eighteen hours a day. It happened so suddenly.
I went to see doctors who told me nothing was wrong and sent me home without any solutions. It was a struggle to wake up long enough to shower, grab a bite to eat, and go back to sleep. It took literally years of visiting doctors before I could find one who worked with me and got me (mostly) back on track. It was a slow road.
There’s a silver lining. Over that time I learned how to streamline my business, working way less hours and earning more than I had even putting in overtime. That efficiency was truly born through necessity. I would have continued putting in long hours and selling less books if that hadn’t happened. Now I try to keep my business streamlined.
My author business started as a five-figure struggle with long hours and a constant fear that I wouldn’t make enough to pay the mortgage. Investing in marketing and Facebook ads is what transformed my business into a high six-figure salary working four hours per day. It’s my goal to empower romance authors to sell more of the books they work so hard to write.

I also run an event for authors focused on building a career. Romance Author Mastermind 2018 happened in September 2018 at the Four Seasons Hotel Houston sold out at 230 seats! More information on the event here: http://romanceauthormastermind.com.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that Houston is so diverse and full of life. Every weekend we can visit an art studio or a craft market or a park. That’s one of the reasons I picked the Four Seasons Hotel Houston as the location for Romance Author Mastermind – it’s in the heart of downtown steps away from Discovery Green.
