Today we’d like to introduce you to Snater George.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I have always had this gift to create. I can still remember the first thing that influenced me to start drawing, and that was my love for comics. Yes, like most, I admired the pictures, over the story line, but I was just so drawn to how the characters were created. I would copy some of the characters to try and duplicate exactly what I saw on the pages. I guess, one might say, this is what sparked my style of creation, as a technical artist. I would challenge myself, from Spider-Man to X-Men, I even drew Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, which was my first large piece I ever did, and it was posted in the library of my old middle School. Even then, I was always attempting to challenge my own limits.
My father was an Architect and my mother was a V.A. Nurse, but she drew as well. Neither of my parents went any further to embrace the Fine Arts. I would be the first of this generation to pursue a career using my gifts and talents.
After high school, went to college, I obtained my Bachelor of Visual Communications in the Fine Arts. While pursuing my degree, I went to three very different schools. I learned something from each that set each apart from the other. However, I believe the bulk of my background and foundation came from my time while at the University of Houston. Here, is where I gained exposure to everything from pot making, printmaking, matting work, mounting work, displaying work, and the lather.
Many artists know, that while in school, there is little time, if any, to create the things you are passionate about. There are projects to do and deadlines to meet, once school ended, I entered in to a new phase where I am trying to figure out what area of the arts I want to pursue. I now had vast knowledge of different styles of art, photography, digital illustration, web development, and coding, in addition to my ability to draw in different mediums. But I struggled with deciding on what I enjoyed most.
I began to start participating in local community art shows. Seeing what others where doing inspired me to rise to occasion. Now that I had gotten my feet wet and been exposed to the works of others I wanted more. But my work still was not very big I had not discovered my love for the canvas just yet. My mediums then were pen and ink, charcoal, oil pastels, and art markers, I also struggled with color.
I would visit the Art Museums of Houston for inspiration, but what was most inspiring was going to local shows and seeing what others like me are doing. The downtown streets of Houston have some awesome graffiti art on the walls if you know where to go.
My first time picking up the brush was only about a year ago, although I have been creating all my life. So now, you could say I have discovered my passion for the arts. After creating my first acrylic on canvas painting it became very popular. It was only 16×24. It was a small piece, but I was very proud of it. People began requesting my art, it was almost overwhelming, I began to participate in other shows such as the Pancake and Booze Art Show, Elyn X Art Social, displaying in different studios such as the East End Studio, Jo Mar Visions Studio, the Shrine of the Black Madonna, and presently have work on display at Duvin Pintor Art Gallery in downtown Houston.
Today, I paint live at a few lounges here in Houston, one of the more popular of the few is The Davenport off Richmond Dr. I connected with a promoter there who also opened the door for me to extend the platform to another artist throughout Houston. So, every Monday, I’m here but I am also able to bring a guest artist on stage to paint live and display their work to sell along with me. Now, I embrace the canvas, I have only been painting with Acrylics for a little over a year, but it’s such a passion for me. So, I want to see where this passion will take me as I Inhale Expression and Exhale Creativity.
Please tell us about your art.
I consider myself to be more of a cross between a Modern and Contemporary Artist. I still have a tact for making things look the way that they are supposed to. I have a very keen eye for detail, I don’t like to miss anything.
Since the internet, it’s very easy to find inspiration. I have a lot of models that request my skills, I have worked with at least two so far. Aside from that I take social images of the day and incorporate them in to my art.
I understand that the original story tellers where artist. Even to this day archeologist still find markings that tell a story of what once was. I aim to tell my story through my art. You can see what I have a weakness for, what I gravitate too, what influences my creativity. I understand that with a platform comes a responsibility to my community as well as to myself.
I try to be very tasteful with what I create, even if it is erotic and I presently have an erotic series that is ongoing. I try to put people back in scenes from movies that take us back to our child hood or simpler times before the internet for sure. Paintings like “Kiesha from the movie Belly,” or when I painted Sho Nuff from the famous movie of the 80’s ” The Last Dragon,” or my Gremlins 2.0 piece.
I like for my art to look as if it’s going to pop off the page and for potential buyers to want it on their walls. Please know that I am very passionate about what I do and will be sure that this echo’s through my art.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
I think the biggest challenge is knowing and realizing your own worth. This is important so that you do not find yourself over worked and under paid. I learned long ago that I have a gift but it took some time for me to discover the worth of what I create. Especially when the request for what I create began to grow.
