Today we’d like to introduce you to Son Bayou
Son, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Son Bayou started from the love of cumbia and its roots. We played in pulgas, quinceaneras, and house parties for more than 10 years before being found by Los Skarnales’ Felipe Galvan on the Flea market located on Airline, on the northside of Houston. He offered us a a opening slot on one of their events in the famous and long gone Fitzgerald’s, and we gladly took his offer. Now as an up and coming local cumbia band, we want to show the world the cumbia we play and love to see people dance to it!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As aspiring artists, we constantly struggle to stay afloat and relevant in this new, content-generated world. We’ve had our hiatuses here and there. One of us had a kid a couple of years back, so we really didn’t play again for another 2 years. It’s is nearly impossible to attempt to make a living from music alone. But we’re in a really good spot right now and have a good balance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We take our cumbia very serious! we love to interpret colombian folk music in accordion and are one of the only bands in Houston that stay true to its roots.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people don’t know this, but we are all born and raised in Monterrey, Nuevo leon. which is a city deep in the mountains on the north of Mexico. We are also mostly self-taught in the music we play.
