Meet Song Lee of Tigers Martial Arts Group in Katy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Song Lee.

Song, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I came to the USA in October of 1992 to study. My dream was to be a professor at Yong-in University. I had studied at U. of H. graduate school central campus major was P.E. motor skill behavior. I couldn’t get a master’s degree. I opened my first business in February of 1996 at I-10 and Beltway 8. I have now 2 school locations. Our Mason school location facility is 19,000 (10,000 / 5,000 / 4000) sq. ft. buildings with beautiful Koi pond, deck, and playground. Our Cinco Ranch school recently opened with a 6,050 sq. ft. building. Also, we own a 27,000 sq. ft. shopping center adjacent to our first school.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I didn’t have as much of a struggle as I had expected.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tigers Martial Arts Group – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are a martial arts school specializing in Taekwondo and Yongmoodo. We teach students from 4 years old through adults. In addition to our regular classes, we have a sparring competition team, a poomsae (forms) competition team, a demonstration team, and are starting a judo sparring team. Our first school in Katy opened 11 years ago and has been growing steadily. We’ve recently opened a second location in the Cinco Ranch area of Katy to better serve our students as the Katy area has grown.

While many people are familiar with Taekwondo, Yongmoodo is not yet as well known. Yongmoodo is a recent development from Yong In University in Korea. It combines elements of Hapkido, Judo, and Ju-Jitsu to provide a balanced set of self-defense techniques.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re looking to continue our growth, both in terms of enrollment and in our programs. We currently have a demonstration team and a competition sparring team. We are working on developing a poomsae (forms) competition team and a judo sparring team.
