Meet Sonia Thomas of HTX Brow Lab & Artistry in Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonia Thomas.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sonia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My journey in the beauty industry started my junior year of high school. Believe or not I played soccer my entire life until a knee injury shattered my childhood dream. Failing was not an option but surgery kept me from advancing, ugh. So I threw out my soccer cleats and turned them in for a bag of hair tools.

I entered hair competitions and the adrenaline reminded me of being on the field. Besides hair, I became fascinated with everything makeup! The journey for me was just getting started. While I completed 1,500 hours, I took the untraditional path and opted out on testing.

Landing my first makeup job with mac cosmetics was a dream. Success was my drive and competition came from being an athlete. I was scared to fail, in turn that was my motivation in succeeding. After seven years with the company, I knew my artistry had more to gain & my freelancing life kicked-off. Nars, Bobbi Brown & Bvlgari were a few companies I worked closely with and made a name for myself. In 2011 tom ford beauty was making its way into Neimans Marcus and I was 1 of 3 beauty advisors. Talk about “look ma I made it’’ moment, our counter quickly rose to the top becoming the first million-dollar door. The drive to succeed gave me a platform to advance into an account coordinator. This was my dream job as an artist and educator. My position gave me a chance to travel, educate, advise, grow and hunger to want more. I continued my beauty career with Chantecaille, Chanel and my last launch Marc Jacobs in 2015.

I quickly learned through this journey that it wasn’t only the success I gained, but the women I touched that made me become passionate. Their stories molded me and in return I helped them see their beauty came from within. My drive to help women came not only from this journey, it also came from hearing that my sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. My thoughts were “clean cosmetics, good wigs & eyebrows” yes those were exactly my thoughts. While researching, microblading had become the “it” in the beauty industry, I searched for the best educator and voila she was in Houston. I watched for a year and saved up for the course until all funds were collected. I left retail, took my course, gained my certification and while filled with excitement I still needed more.

You know that saying “closed mouths don’t get fed” so I reached back out to my educator about an apprenticeship. Two weeks later I was starting my part-time apprenticeship/ contract work/assistant. This my fellow beauties was the biggest challenge of my career. Fast forward to December 2017 were my pt job decided to dissolve my position. I was left to wonder if I had made the best decision in investing in myself, what will I do & how will I make income. I allowed failure to capture my thoughts and decided that signing a new contract wouldn’t be best at the time. My educator/mentor understood and informed me that her door would always be open. January came and my thoughts became a battle, freelance work was hard to come by and retail was not an option. As I pondered about my career choices, my dearest husband said “create your own job!” – Lightbulb. He was right, I’ve help create jobs, build million dollar counters and educated hundreds of artist. What was I waiting for?! On February 2018 htx brow lab & artistry was birthed.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all.

– Being a tenured makeup artist pulled me in a different direction when learning PMU. It was truly a challenge & geometry was a key factor in perfecting brows. You just can’t wipe it off.

– Finding my own method to the madness help me break past my plateau. When learning a new craft we get stuck in the rut of how we learned. Learn your own rhythm and it will launch your work to next level.
