Meet Sonjia Pelton-Sam of The Glam Coach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonjia Pelton-Sam.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I wear a lot of hats, I am a wife, mother, grandmother, educator in Houston ISD, speaker, author, coach, and friend to everyone I meet, I hold 4 degrees, one is a counseling degree in mental health with specialty in addiction & substance abuse, & volunteers in prisons & jails to help reduce recidivism & stop repeat offenses. I’m a certified life coach, certified in art as a therapeutic practice, and certified teacher in the state of Texas.

Coaching & consulting is something I was born to do. The official journey started years ago from my beauty shop chair. As a salon owner of the then largest African American Salon in Ft. Worth Texas, I would have clients with various problems; I would listen & then give them a step by step plan or advise that would solve their problems. I got married and moved to the Houston area 14 years ago and was a housewife for a while. I got bored and went to school to become a cosmetology instructor, which was a great job. I went to college while I was teaching cosmetology and received 4 degrees. One of my degrees is in counseling and mental health.

After that journey, the tug of being a business owning was pulling on me once more. Life coaching was trending at that time, and so I looked into what life coaching was all about. I decided this was perfect. I was always helping people map out their life, plan, and come up with winning strategies for success, so why not make income doing what comes natural and something that I love to do, helping people make their life better. The journey to become The GLAM Coach LLC began with me getting certified as a Life Coach and an accredited certification in Art as a Therapeutic Practice Coach.

Now I help women and girls find their true purpose in life using The GLAM Factor method.

Everything that is worth doing or having in life has its challenges or little bumps in the road. I have overcome sickness, depression, shame of not feeling I measured up at times, disappointments, two divorces, I know the ups & downs of business, I was once a single parent of 2, and a list of other things, that now allow me to help others in life.

The Journey of becoming The GLAM Coach is no different. It has its highs and lows, and yes it is challenging. The hardest part of it all is really trying to learn all of the moving pieces to this new digital social media-driven society when it comes to business.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Houston is a great place to start a business. Houston is a melting pot of different cultures. You can connect with people of all walks of life and from all over the world. The connections are great for business, making lasting connections and great friendships born out of most of these connections. The city offers various programs, grants, and funding to help advance small business, this helps The City of Houston thrive and stay one of the fast-growing cities in the US. My only complaint is the humidity and the traffic LOL.

I am a native of Dallas, but I am now happy to be HOUSTONIAN.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I contribute my successes in life to GOD 1st. Next would be my parents Alford & Kaella Pelton. My husband and kids are understanding of my call to help others and they share their time gratefully with others. I think my biggest cheerleaders are my two kids Alford & Lauren, and my sister Iris, they tell me to keep going. Rochelle Miller played a big part in me speaking. She would push me to speak at her conferences even when I would say no.

Moley Monbelly & Mr. Buckner, helped me map out going back to college and finishing successfully with 4 degrees. Vicki Semander & Ruby Horace pushed me out of my comfort zone through The Sister Ship Organization by pushing me to get out and meet new people all over the Houston Area. I have coaches, trainers, and mentors that help teach, coach, and inspire me to do better. Some are Audria Richmond of Uncloaned, Johnathan Sprinkles The Connectologist, & Michelle Williams The Ignited Teacher. Lastly, I have great friends and clients that push me to help them grow. When they grow I grow more every time.
