Meet Sophia & Syed Ali of The Popsy Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia & Syed Ali.

Sophia & Syed Ali

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, it all started right here in Houston, Texas, where we were born and grew up. We’ve always been big on celebrating our Pakistani and Mexican roots, especially through food. So, we had this idea to bring those flavors together in a fun way, and that’s how The Popsy Bar came to be.

We whipped up a menu with paletas like mango with chamoy and watermelon, along with some classics like malai kulfi and mango lassi from Pakistan. Started out with just a cart, but now we’ve got all sorts of treats – from coffee and mocktails to churros and even a live birria station.

Our motto has always been quality over quantity. We want every bite and sip to be special, whether you’re having a small get-together or a big event. We take our coffee and popsicles seriously. And always use the best ingredients.

Looking ahead, our goal for this year is to expand The Popsy Bar and bring everyone in our community together, making connections and sharing experiences. We’re keen to have our children and friends join us in this effort, as we believe it’s important to promote inclusivity and friendship through what we do.

At The Popsy Bar, we’re dedicated to bringing a blend of flavors to every corner of Houston, ensuring that every moment is filled with delicious food and positive energy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh, definitely not a smooth ride, let me tell you. Back in 2019, we were all set to kick off this venture, but then COVID threw us a curveball. And on top of all that, in 2020, Sophia welcomed a new addition to the family. Juggling motherhood and entrepreneurship added another layer of complexity, but hey, it’s all part of the journey, right?

Finally, in 2022, we said, “Let’s go for it!” We got our customized bike cart and dove into the world of popsicles. But getting there wasn’t easy. For me, figuring out the right ingredients and getting that perfect consistency was a real puzzle. I ended up taking online classes and reaching out to local experts for guidance.

And for Syed, well, he had a stable 9-5 job, but leaving that to jump into this venture full-time? That was a big leap, especially with a family to support. But we believed in ourselves and took the risk.

It was a stretch to invest in the business. However, we knew it was worth it, and we found ways to make it work.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
At The Popsy Bar, we’re all about bringing a fusion of flavors to the streets of Houston. Our specialty lies in crafting delicious and unique paletas (Mexican-style popsicles) that blend the vibrant tastes of our Pakistani and Mexican heritages.

From classic flavors like mango with chamoy to innovative creations like malai kulfi and mango lassi, each bite is a celebration of culture and taste.

But we’re more than just popsicles. Our mobile cart business offers a diverse range of treats, from refreshing mocktails, cold brew lattes, Pakistani chai, boba teas to indulgent desserts like churros and funnel cakes.

We even offer savory options like Mexican-style street corn and a live halal birria station, where you can enjoy street birria tacos, ramen birria noodles, and loaded birria fries. It’s a culinary journey that caters to every palate.

What sets us apart is our commitment to quality, creativity, and community. We handpick only the finest ingredients to ensure that every bite is a burst of flavor. Our dedication to infusing our cultural backgrounds into our offerings makes each visit to The Popsy Bar a unique and memorable experience.

Brand-wise, we’re most proud of our ability to bring people together through food. Whether it’s families enjoying popsicles on a hot summer day or friends gathering around our cart for coffee and conversation, we cherish the connections we make with our customers.

We want our readers to know that at The Popsy Bar, it’s not just about the food—it’s about creating moments of joy and connection that last a lifetime.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
One of our favorite childhood memories is camping out on the beach in Galveston with our parents. Just lying there, listening to the waves crashing and feeling the cool ocean breeze—it was pure bliss. We always had the best sleep during those nights.
