Meet Stephanie Joy Grigg of The True Beauty In You in Midtown Houston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Joy Grigg.

Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My concern arises from the cries of the Black girls in which I encounter on a daily basis. I believe that our community has an obligatory responsibility to aid in building healthy individuals. We cannot equip better leaders, future womanists, and powerful preachers for tomorrow if we don’t strive to deal with their unhealthy emotional state today, even as children. The fact is that many youth face daily the realities of trauma, such as the loss of friends and loved ones, the fear of school shootings, bullying, hunger, learning disabilities and many others. Many Black girls also grow up without a father or male figure in their lives, which contributes to the increased potential of abandonment issues.

Many of these young ladies go through traumatic events at a tender young age and I strongly believe that God has called me to this demographic. As such, I believe that they’re a fraction of individuals that warrant intentional focus and special consideration if we’re going to reach them effectively.

This is not a business I just wanted to start, but rather, I identify with these young ladies because of some of the obstacles in my life that I’ve lived through. From my testimony, I watched God’s restoration power on display in the lives of our young ladies. Therefore, eight years ago, I was blessed to launch an organization entitled The True Beauty In You, LLC. Designed to address the needs concerning Black Girls in an urban community. By God’s grace, I’ve been able to grow my business in various facets – most tangibly for the last eight years through the establishment of an annual conference sponsored by my home church. In doing so, I have sought to holistically address the issues of Black Girls from their childhood until they reach the age of 21 on topics ranging from career exploration, personal and emotional development, spiritual wholeness and several others in between as well.

It was important to me that I produced practical resources to help our young ladies. Therefore, I am thoroughly excited to announce that I released my Children’s Book ‘The True Beauty In You’ and I am currently writing a book for young ladies as they develop in their teenage years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Entrepreneurial guru E. Joseph Cossman once said, in his own cynical way, that “obstacles are things a person sees when he takes his eyes off his goal.” There is no life without obstacles, but it is our response to these obstacles that determines the measure of our character. Achieving my life goals, inclusive of my academic pursuits, have not been without struggle. I made a decision long ago to keep my goals larger than the obstacles that seek to deter me from obtaining success within my life, my call to ministry, and within my community. I believe each barrier that has been placed in my path has made me stronger and has taught me how to stay focused. Such focus, amidst the obstacles endured, can be seen as a development in action within various aspects of my life.

Please tell us about The True Beauty In You.
The True Beauty In You LLC provides a framework for young ladies to learn leadership skills, engage in character development exercises and discuss topics on self-esteem, self-respect and self-love. Through motivational workshops, mentoring and conferences on a variety of topics, this company will help young ladies reach their highest potential.

Through my workshops and conferences, young ladies learn to:

– Find healthy ways to motivate themselves in order to achieve their goals.
– Use various affirmations to help guide them throughout their life.
– Gain academic advancement skills that will prepare them for college.
– Gain self-confidence skills that will help them in their interview process.
– Use leadership skills in any context.
– Prioritize and strategize to operate in their purpose.

I believe what sets me apart is my unique way of reaching young ladies ages 12 and below when I host my annual Princess Tea parties. What also sets me apart is the way I connect with young ladies. I have the capability to teach young ladies how to affirm themselves from within so they can be better leaders in today’s society. I am able to show students how to develop in their passion so they can operate in their purpose. I had the honor of delivering speeches and conducting leadership workshops to thousands of elementary, middle, high school and college students around throughout the United States, Bahamas, Trinidad and Jamaica.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that my loyalty and love for young ladies contributed greatly to my success.
