Meet Stephanie Purnell of Electric Chair Tattoo & Piercing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Purnell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It was 1994 and I was 15. I was spending the summer in New York City, with no parents in sight. They thought it would be a “cultural” visit to stay with a friend local to the city. It sure was. One afternoon I found myself in the East Village as one newly found friend was getting a tattoo. This was my big break! I chose a tiny little thing off the wall, no bigger than a quarter. Next thing you know, I’d joined the club. I had a tattoo. I went back home and eventually the parents found out. So not to have a “biker or sailor” for a daughter, that tattoo was immediately laser removed. When I turned 18, I got that tattoo put right back on and didn’t look back. I started tattooing when I was 19, and now I’ve been tattooing for almost 20 years.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve been extremely lucky.

Electric Chair Tattoo & Piercing – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What I personally aim for is bold lines and bright colors. My work resembles the screen print pop art I’ve collected since my teenage years: Kozik, Coop, Uncle Charlie, Lindsey Kuhn, etc. As far as The Electric Chair as a whole, I’ve always been proud of the diversity of our artists. While everyone has their specialty, we are well rounded in just about anything our clients are looking for whether it be a portrait, water color, black & grey, or bold & bright.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
We’re still here and people still like us.
