Meet Stephanie Swain of Kumon Math and Reading Center of Houston-Westchase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Swain.

Meet Stephanie Swain, the center director for Kumon Math and Reading Center – Westchase. Swain made the career move from more than 14 years in leadership roles at several Fortune 500 companies to help children in the community reach their highest potential with Kumon after having her own Kumon experiences as a mom.

“My passion for education stems from wanting my own children to become confident, independent thinkers,” says Swain, who is an extensively trained and certified professional instructor. “My son was struggling with reading when he was transitioning from Kindergarten to First Grade. After seeing my son start to thrive academically and develop a love of learning in Kumon, I was inspired to spread the Kumon Method to children across the West Houston area.”

Kumon Westchase has been in business for two years with Swain at the helm, who herself has been part of the Westchase community and area schools for the last 10 years.

Biography and Background:
As a native Houstonian, Stephanie has been an active part of the Westchase community and area schools for the last 10 years. Prior to opening her Kumon Center, Stephanie spent over 14 years in leadership roles at several Fortune 500 companies, including Coca-Cola and GE. During the course of her career, she volunteered and mentored children in different capacities which fostered her passion to work with students. Stephanie is focused and disciplined and ready to start working with your student.

Training and Certification:
Stephanie holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Boston University.

She actively participates with the Parent Teacher Organization at Askew Elementary and is an active volunteer who enjoys helping kids and teens thrive academically.

Has it been a smooth road?
Building a center from the ground up has not been easy. You have many days to day challenges including finding the right staff and working to maintain the highest level of quality to provide customized instruction to each student. I have been fortunate to acquire a great team of dedicated individuals who share the same passion to inspire children to maximize their potential.

Every kid is different and has different motivations. It is our job to understand what makes them tick, tap into that, and show them how far they can go. When I see the light come on in these kids, it gives me the energy and drives to reach as many kids as possible.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Kumon Math and Reading Center of Houston-Westchase – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
For more than 50 years, Kumon’s after-school academic enrichment program has helped children achieve success worldwide. We strive to instill in children the desire to achieve and the motivation to learn on their own. Whether your child is seeking enrichment, needs help catching up or is just beginning his or her academic career, Kumon is designed to help him or her develop a love of learning.

Students advance through the program at their own pace. Our emphasis on individualized learning helps your child become focused, motivated and self-reliant. We monitor each child’s progress to ensure comprehension before moving on to a new concept. With a strong academic foundation, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, your child has the potential to achieve whatever he or she desires.

We work on developing lifelong skills – focus, discipline, work skills, instead of just tutoring a child in a specific subject. This is what sets us apart from the competition.

Once a child adopts these skills, they are prepared for success in school and throughout life. This is why our kids are able to accelerate their learning and achieve mastery of material 2-3 years above their grade level.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love that the diversity of Houston and I feel fortunate to have one of the most diverse Kumon centers in the city. My students always share stories with me about their travels back to their home country and I get to learn about so many cultures. I feel like I have a global extended family.

As a native Houstonian, I am proud to live in a city that embraces so many cultures and offers limitless options to explore cultural activities and indulge in ethnic foods.
