Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Subodh Chauhan.
Dr. Chauhan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
As a reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialist, I help individuals and couples fulfill one of life’s most basic core human desires: to have a family.
The path that led me to Houston was a challenging one. I grew up in India and was a studious child. I was admitted to medical school in the 12th grade. Academically, I was first in the county and 12th in the State of Gujarat, where I am from. I completed medical school and started my Obstetrics and Gynecology residency in India. I wanted to learn and do more.
I had an opportunity to study in the United Kingdom, where I went and obtained MRCOG, which is the equivalent to residency in the United States. From there, I went to New York where I had secured a residency spot for one year. I had to work hard and prove myself to my Residency Director before the four-year residency was extended to me.
After residency, I decided to complete a fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. There were 34 fellowship spots available and it was highly competitive. Luckily, I matched in Detroit, Michigan, where I worked as a fellow for three years.
After fellowship, I moved to Charleston, West Virginia where I helped start an IVF Center at West Virginia University and worked as the Division Director. It was a great experience in Charleston, but we were limited to what we could do with in vitro fertilization (IVF) and I wanted to be able to do all that I could to help individuals and couples have children. In 2006, I relocated to Houston and settled into private practice at Houston Fertility Specialists.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I like to say that I took the scenic route in life. One of the most important and critical challenges in my career was passing an exam in Singapore to be able to study in the United Kingdom. It was expensive for me to travel from India to Singapore and there was the added pressure of knowing that only 20 percent of students end up passing the test.
The next challenge was the culture. Patients expectations in the United Kingdom and the United States are very different than in India.
In the United States, I had to convince my Program Director that I deserved a residency spot. It was no small feat. I was fortunate that my wife was my source of constant support throughout this journey. We never had a dull moment! Couples who are struggling with infertility have an arduous, tough and challenging time and being able to help them have a family gives me immense satisfaction.
