Meet Summer Reeves of TXRX Labs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Reeves.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I came across TXRX Labs in early 2014. I’ve always been someone who loved art and learning new things so when I found the lab, a local non-profit maker space where you can take classes and as a member use their equipment and facilities for your own projects, I knew I had found my new home. Within a few months, I had taken just about every class they offered and began teaching classes myself, another passion of mine.

In the three years since I began working with TXRX, I’ve watched it and myself grow significantly. Starting in 2008 with a few people to today with over 50,000 square feet and hundreds of members. TXRX has continued to grow its available space and classes as well as working within the community on initiatives like Crafters for Good, which brought volunteers together to build furniture for those affected by Hurricane Harvey and Harvey Relief Seminars, youth programs promoting STEM education, an entrepreneurship program for local youth in the Houston East End, and offering equipment and programs for educators to help them successfully bring the maker movement into schools.

As for myself, since starting at TXRX Labs I’ve started my own company, Season Studios where sell handmade commissioned art, jewelry, and accessories, become a director at TXRX Labs, teach classes in leatherworking, airbrushing, costuming, and laser cutting. and work to further the maker and innovation cause within the city of Houston.

I still love having the opportunity to learn and prove to myself that I can do something new and I, even more, I love being able to take that knowledge and share it with others so they can share that same passion.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always challenges, but we’re lucky to have an amazing team of staff and volunteers who help to make TXRX a success. While equipment and space are important, having a tight-knit community that is willing to help others and share their knowledge and expertise is really what keeps us moving forward and growing.

TXRX Labs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
TXRX Labs is a 501(c)3 nonprofit innovation, education, and collaboration hub serving the creative community of Houston, Texas. Classes are offered on a variety of topics including woodworking, welding, machining, programming, electronics, drafting & computer-aided design, arts, jewelry, ceramics, and STEAM education for young makers. The 50,000 square foot facility provides an open environment where tools, knowledge, and skills are shared for hobbyists, inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, students, and anyone interested in becoming a maker.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is making a person, community or the world better than you found it. Small impacts matter and I think it’s important for everyone to leave a positive impact on everything they do.
