Meet Dr. Ilicia Mathis and Dr. Erika Jackson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Ilicia Mathis and Dr. Erika Jackson.

Dr. Mathis and Dr. Jackson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As former athletes from our respective hometowns of Washington, DC and Hamden, CT, we met at the University of Hartford while pursuing our Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Being the only African-Americans in our class, we were able to connect due to similar upbringings and develop a long-lasting friendship where we were able to hold each other accountable throughout our college years.

In our second year of graduate school, we elected to go to Houston for a clinical rotation. We loved it! From the southern hospitality and nightlife to the local cuisine, we enjoyed every bit of it. When we returned back to Connecticut, we began brainstorming business ideas as we both had a passion for creating unique ways to rehabilitate people. We both wanted to develop a company that represented our new innovative treatment philosophies. And here we are today! As our business continues to grow, we continue to develop relationships with other professionals here in Houston to put our ideas into action.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to entrepreneurship has not been easy. We’ve faced numerous obstacles that were intended to set us back, but together we were able to persevere and succeed. Some obstacles included gender and racial discrimination which consequently resulted in grant and mentorship denial. Together, we continued to push forward and find other resources and mentors to help educate us and grow our business.

Our sessions are intended to leave our patients feeling more comfortable and confident in taking an active role in their recovery.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To us, success is measured by our impact on our patient’s lives!
