Meet Susan Brooks of Susan Bee in Southwest/ Pearland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Brooks.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Susan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
There’s a quote that I heard some time ago that says, “Art speaks where words are unable to explain”. That is the perfect illustration of what art means to me. Painting allows me to temporarily escape the “now”, drown out the noise, and create. Create images, emotions, and ideas that I am unable to put into words.

Some people choose meditation, some choose prayer, others choose solitude. Me however, my therapy is art. It’s my happy place. Art allows me to be as silly as I want or as vulnerable as I want.

My paintings purposely don’t have faces. I never wanted my paintings to look like a specific person or group of people. I want others to look at my artwork and interpret freely. I want them to visualize themselves in my work; visualize who they used to be, who they want to be, or who they can relate to. “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Edgar Degas. That simple quote is…perfect

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Art is not meant to be perfect or flawless. You’re supposed to mess up, start over, take a break, and try again. If I master every single piece with the first attempt, then maybe I’m not challenging myself enough. Im also my own biggest critic, as most artists are. Where others see a masterpiece, I’m staring at the one crooked line or flower lol. I’m still learning daily by studying videos, going to classes, or learning from fellow artists on social platforms. It’s amazing to me how every single artist has a different technique or flow. I’ve only been painting for almost two years now, so I have to remind myself “You’re still learning. It’s okay if it’s not perfect. Take a break.”

I often like to turn my canvas completely around when frustrated, and not look at it for a day or two before I start working on it again. We all deserve a break and I never want to push myself harder than I need to.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I do paint for commission a few times a year however, initially I didn’t begin for any financial gain. With each share, “like”, comment or even construction criticism I am so grateful. However, if someone loves my painting enough to purchase it then, Awesome!

What were you like growing up?
As a child, I was a spoiled, accident-prone, silly, and very determined growing up. Growing up, I had a few illnesses and disorders that prevented me from being very active, but I found other ways to channel that energy. I enjoyed school, loved it actually. Many folks ask if I painted or drew as a child and the answer is no. I don’t recall being the child who came home with beautiful paintings or drawing to put on the refrigerator lol. But I come from a family of amazing artists. My grandparents, uncle, cousins, and niece all are very gifted with the paintbrush or sketch pencil. I never knew I was interested into art until I was.

“A special thank you to every person who has purchased a painting, liked, commented or shared my work on social media outlooks. Support doesn’t always require money, and I appreciate the love I have received from friends, friends and even strangers.

I have an amazing support system of family and friends who believe in my vision and dream. Even on days where I feel like throwing in the towel, there is always someone pushing me further and encouraging me along the way. That type of support goes further than money can take me.

Lastly, thank you to the Voyage Houston team for allowing me to share my story with you. “
