Today we’d like to introduce you to Susie Tannery.
Susie is a former High School Band Nerd and College Mathlete that was introduced to CrossFit in March 2009 by her husband David. She had tried many other fitness programs before, including aerobics, boot camp, triathlons, working out at the gym and simply running. After several weeks at CrossFit, she was convinced this was the workout for her. It took building up and seeing results in her body composition and workouts to see what this seemingly expensive program could do for her.
Susie was born in Singapore and lived all over the world as her Dad was in the oil business. She eventually called Missouri City, Texas (the River Oaks of Fort Bend Country) home and attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a BS in Civil Engineering in 1996. She worked a couple years for Halliburton Company and couldn’t get enough of Texas A&M, so she went back for her M.B.A., graduating in 2000. She then worked for Siemens Corporation and most recently for Continental Airlines, where she was able to travel the world for her job. During her time at Continental, she was able to visit many CrossFits around the United States. Since leaving Continental, she decided to pursue her passion for CrossFit and open her own box. She also is a Lieutenant in the US Navy Supply Corps.
Susie has run 7 marathons, a dozen or so half marathons, finished a Half Ironman, participated in the MS150 and has competed in many CrossFit Events and Competitions. In 2011, she most recently participated on a team that was ranked first in the South Central Region in 2011. This team took first place in Regionals and went to the 2011 CrossFit Games in Los Angeles, California. What an amazing experience! In 2012, Susie participated in the Reebok CrossFit Open and placed 44th out of over 950 women in the South Central Regional. In April 2012, she competed at the South Central Regionals in San Antonio, Texas.
Susie’s favorite thing about CrossFit: Your age does not limit you in CrossFit. A 42 year old Mother of two can compete on the same level with 21 year old girls. CrossFit can make you feel 10 to 15 years younger, as it has for Susie. Susie’s enthusiasm is seen in everything she does! She knows what it’s like to be 50 pounds overweight after having two kids back to back, and how to overcome and work towards a goal. Anything is achievable in her eyes.
When Susie isn’t busy CrossFitting, she loves to spend time with her husband David, son Morgan and daughter Macyn, along with the family dogs Abba and Charlie. She loves Margaritas and 80s music, naps, dance offs, karaoke, and softball.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So many struggles. Early on, business-wise, AllSport CrossFit was very successful. There were very few “boxes” in Houston in 2012, and we were one of the first gyms in the area. Then, “CrossFit” exploded and there was a box on every corner so location was critical to clients. They could go to a box around the corner versus AllSport.
AllSport CrossFit – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
AllSport CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that is constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. CrossFit movements are universal and are found in everyday life, for example lifting a bag of dog food from the floor and placing it on a shelf above you. They are natural, safe, and efficient ways of moving external objects and they are essential to maintaining a good quality of life. CrossFit training can benefit people in all walks of life: From grandparents that want to stay active with small children to professional athletes and to those exercise junkies that have stayed fit their entire lives. CrossFit meets all of their life’s physical needs.
This is a training methodology that seeks to forge a broad, general, and inclusive level of fitness to prepare clients for the unknown and unknowable in life. We train in a gym and we use some objects that are found in a gym, but we do not train for the gym. The specialty of CrossFit is to not specialize in any one movement or routine. Through constantly varied programming, your experiences are diversified and you are encouraged to push your boundaries and become more comfortable with being uncomfortable. Fixed and predictable routines are the enemy.
At AllSport CrossFit, you are encouraged to track your daily progress in real, measurable terms. Recording times and workloads consistently over time results in evidence-based fitness which allows you to see real progress and improvement through both changes in your body as well as gauge able data.
AllSport CrossFit is:
Fitness.
Fun.
Community.
True Strength.
Life Changing.
Life Saving.
Reaching your Athletic Potential.
SCALABLE FOR EVERYONE!!!!!
We have the most passionate and COMpassionate Coaches in the Houston Area. We make sure you get your money’s worth (check out our reviews) in the hour that you are with us. Our warm-ups are lengthy, you’ll get a great skill/strength and the WOD will definitely test you, mentally and physically.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
As an older “Owner” and Mother of two young children, I am by far so proud I have built a business that changes people’s lives the moment they walk in the door. I’m a Civil Engineer by degree, and I was a “band nerd” throughout High School. I discovered “running” and a boot camp in my late 20’s. I would have never considered myself athletic but somehow in my mid 30s I found myself competing at the 2011 CrossFit Games.
90% of clients are happy with coming in and working out but you have 10% that come and thank you and hug on you for “saving” them and changing their bad habits. It’s so rewarding and worth every negative comment or review you encounter.
