Today we’d like to introduce you to Syä.
Syä, before we jump into specific questions about your music, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been singing and creating music in the shadows since I could remember. Always writing and making melodies in from the comfort of my room never planning on releasing these ideas. It wasn’t until I went to The Weeknd’s concert my senior year of high school that I started to truly consider music as my path. I sat on that seed of inspiration as went on to college, while there I met my now producer Chris. From there we started working together designing a sound that represented both of us – me creating the melodies and lyrics while he creating the beats. After five years of us creating music for our ears only I have finally started releasing original music in February of this year. It’s been long journey leading up to this but every bit of waiting has served as preparation for what’s to come.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
On one hand creating music and writing has always been quite natural and easy to me, almost instinctive. On the other hand, the process of allowing my work to leave my laptop or phone and allow it to roam free in the world has been daunting. I found myself second guessing and not believing in my work which delayed the process. When you’ve comfort zone for so long the idea of leaving it seems so challenging. I’ve sat on music for years up until this point it started to feel like a disservice to myself not to pursue my passion.
Please tell us about your music.
I am a singer, artist. I write my own music, as well as create concepts for the visuals that go alongside them. My music reflects who I am, and everything that spoke to me in the music I listened to and loved growing up. I’m personally proud to be a black female artist carving out a path in a space that can seem to have so many things stacked against me.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memories growing up were the ones of me visiting my native country of Tanzania. My family is originally from there and I’m a first generation American, so to go there and see people especially ones who reflected me is something that has stuck with me. I’ve been four times throughout my life and each time the food, the culture, the simplicity of life, inspires me.
