Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia and Ben McDonald.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Our journey with Keeping Mc began when we purchased our first house in 2015. With our dreams set on cultivating and creating a warm welcoming home for all that walked through the doorsteps, Keeping Mc began. We created unique handcrafted pieces either from scratch or old vintage piece to really make our house unique, beautiful, and one of a kind. We wanted to connect with people through our pieces weather through personalization, a song lyric, quote, or bible verse that meant something to them. After several compliments, the idea sparked to share our talents and go into business as a family.
The name, Keeping Mc comes from a special place in our heart. You see, Sylvia’s maiden name was McMillan and as a child, she always believed she would keep her maiden name once getting married because she liked the typography of her last name. Something felt special with the Mc. She promised she would never change her name. Then, she met her perfect match, that let her keep the Mc she loved so much but allowed for the McDonald name to be carried on as they became a family. Keeping Mc will always be special to us.
Please tell us about your art.
Keeping Mc is a place where we come together in our little creative ways as husband + wife. Together, we create beautiful, unique, handcrafted pieces for your home. Whether we use our carpentry skills and build something from scratch or incorporate old vintage pieces, each piece is one of a kind. We believe that words are a beautiful way to express what’s on one’s mind and soul. We incorporate words with beautiful, simple, and clean typography in each of our pieces. People connect to words whether it be song lyrics that take you back to a fond memory or seeing a quote that reminds you a special someone, words make you connect. Our pieces just allow people to do just that.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
Dream big, work hard, stay humble, give big, and never be afraid to tell your story.
