Tameka, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
One month after I quit my job and one year after completing design school, I decided to start RA Design Studio LLC. Being a young designer with a project management and engineering background I wanted to start a firm that welcomes young designers. A place to gain experience and to be able to grow into the business of design. RA Design Studio LLC is a turn-key design firm that performs interior design, space planning, project management and installations. We create spatial layouts for commercial buildings and small offices, while procuring and installing the furniture. Our first project that we completed was an architectural student studio for a university.
Although that was not a large project, it assisted with getting RA Design Studio recognized for profound quality space planning and furnishings. RA Design has now grown to having two designers, and 1 design specialist. With this magnificent team, I tackle the obstacle of building a small design firm that sources furnishings and design. RA Design Studio is certified with the City of Houston as a Minority Women-Owned Business and HUB with the State of Texas. We specialize in bringing color to design by the use of bright eye-catching hues to lively any office space.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road building a small design firm that sources furnishings. We have to adhere to some adversity due to being a new design company and acquiring certain products. Which leads us to be excluded from some opportunities. Being a woman in business, especially being a woman of color in business is difficult. To overcome the odds of failure, I had many sleepless nights to complete a project. I have had to overcome the obstacles of building this design firm with hope, faith and a penny.

It depends on what you call luck? I don’t know if I could say that I am lucky in business. I experience many failures before I receive one success. So I wouldn’t call that luck, but I can say consistency plays a role. No matter what type of business you own, consistency will always be the key. No matter how many rejections, keep going until you reach your goal.
