Meet Tanisha Tutson of This Is Hair Extensions in SouthWest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Tutson.

Tanisha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was a little girl growing up in Westlake, Louisiana id dream of becoming a celebrity hairstylist. Literally, I still refer back to my 1st-grade journal where I wrote,” When I grow up I want to do hair for famous people”. While in high school, I attended Ft Bend Technical Education Center where I earned my cosmetology license.

I have been licensed since 2007 and have styled hair for as long as I can remember. Things didn’t jump off there! After struggling to find my way in life I enlisted in the Army at a random. Once I figured out I needed to be doing what I was passionate about, I put my license to use and built my clientele working in the back of a beauty supply store for a few years. After rebranding a couple of times, This Is Hair Extensions was born.

I am passionate about many aspects of this profession: the creativity, personal interactions, and client impact is what inspired me to create my company. I believe that education is vital to the inspiration and continued success of any stylist. I am committed to keeping up with the latest hair trends by continually educating myself. Not only is my company a full-service oriented salon but I also provide a full array of products including: raw virgin hair extensions and custom units that I personally handpicked while on a journey in China to find the highest quality vendor.

Providing excellent service has always been my main priority. Applying customer feedback and maintaining a strong social media platform is what has kept my brand successful. And today I am proud to be the sole owner and operator of This Is Hair Extensions.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The last thing this ride has been is smooth. LOL!!! But you know what, I wouldn’t take any of it back. The biggest struggle was the leap to cutting out my side jobs to fully focus on building my clientele. Imagine having no support to fall back on but having to make the decision to quit bartending to take on full booth rent without a solid clientele. I mean a girl had bills and tuition to pay. I mean I was lucky enough to have earned my license in high school so I could immediately start working in a salon and attend college at the same time. I remember asking every successful stylist how did they grow their business and back then social media had just taken off so I’d get the same response, “word of mouth”. each time I heard that it was like a dagger to my heart because I didn’t have enough clients to promote me. Once God positioned me to find a local beauty supply that was hiring stylist I took off from there but the next struggles was being able to charge my worth and/or build a clientele out of this place that could even afford higher prices. So boom I have the clients but now my finance skills are tested!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the This Is Hair Extensions story. Tell us more about the business.
This Is Hair Extensions is a full-service salon. I provide services from natural hair to custom extensions. There is literally nothing I cant do. And I am good at every service I offer. At the moment, I am known for my hair braiding and my custom units/wigs. I am most proud of how I run my business. Professionalism is most important to me. I want each client to walk out with a smile and nothing but positive things to say about my business. What sets me apart from other stylist is my consistency. Consistency with products, services, and environment.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck but I do believe in Gods favor. I believe God placed me in the right places at the right time to meet the right people that would influence me. I also believe that God gave a broken girl a chance at a great life. Some call it luck I call it Favor!
