Today we’d like to introduce you to Luna, Julia & Jad Baba and Dimitri, Alexander & Noah Shanar.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We were talking about fun ways to make money during the summer and our moms overheard us talking about the different business ideas we had. After listening to us, they asked us some questions about why we would want our own business. We told them that we wanted to do something that would bring joy to people’s lives; give people something to make them smile. We thought about homemade jewelry or cold lemonade on a summer day. A few days after we were talking about it, we drove by a house in our neighborhood that had a big number 10 in the yard made of balloons. We all thought it was so cool! Our moms then told us about yard cards. They showed us pictures and we sat together to learn a little more about it.
After doing some research, we all agreed that this would be the perfect business for us. It definitely will put smiles on people’s faces and something we can manage alongside school and our extracurricular activities. We decided to name our business The Yard Card Kids! We made sure that kids was in the name, so everyone would know that it was ours! We were going to be Kid Bosses! With our parent’s help, we formed our LLC and found a supplier within a couple of weeks. We then started coming up with ideas of signs and images that we wanted made for us to start off. As soon as we got our inventory, we started marketing to our community and friends through word of mouth and social media. We had a lot of support from our family and friends starting off and got many bookings within our first month in business. We have continued to create, design and market as much as possible since our launch date of November 26, 2018. We are now gearing up for our one year anniversary and happy to say that business is great!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We have learned a lot in this past year about running a business. The biggest surprise was that we have to pay taxes! We never imagined we would have to share our hard earned money. It was a good but tough lesson for us to swallow. We also learned that a lot of time and effort goes into running a successful business. Without the help of our parents, we would not have always been able to fulfill some of the requirements of being business owners. After all, we are just kids. We are pretty proud of how well we work together as partners and have built stronger friendships through this experience.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Yard Card Kids – what should we know?
The Yard Card Kids are a fun, excited group of kids who want to help make your special occasion spectacular. We help people celebrate their events and milestones by decorating their yards with sayings. We are a rental service that sets up your special request to offer a memorable picture opportunity for all to enjoy. We typically set up between 7-9pm and pick up after 24 hours with options to rent for extra days.
We are most proud of how well we work together! Being in business with friends and family is not always easy, but we are a great team. For example, when one of our families is on vacation or has a special event to attend, we step up when needed. We realize that we work best when we are sitting around the table creating new images and ideas for our signs. This creative process drives our business and our excitement to keep it going. It is so awesome to see our customers appreciate our vision and creativity.
The fact that we are a kid owned and operated business sets us apart from others. We are proud to be young entrepreneurs.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We could not have done this without our parents. Without their guidance, we would not know where to start. They help mentor us every step of the way and they allow us the opportunity to be creative. We design our images and design our displays. They show us how to be organized and plan ahead. When we attend events, they encourage us to talk to people and tell them who we are. That has helped us grow more and more confident in ourselves and our business.
