Meet Theo Tsekouras of CrossFit H-town in Heights and Arts District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theo Tsekouras.

Theo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started in a 2 car garage in June of 2010. That’s when myself, my wife, and two friends got together for a little experiment. We were all struggling to stay in shape, despite our busy lives.

We hated those big-box gyms (with 700 other people waiting for 10 machines)… and we didn’t want to pay big bucks for a personal trainer ($100 an hour? No thanks!)… And we were bored silly by repetitive workouts on DVD (What? Kettlebells again?)

So we started doing CrossFit and a nutrition program, right there in the garage and, well… the results were astonishing.

Just 30 days later, every one of us had lots more energy, we were sleeping like babies, and we all lost inches from their waistlines.

Fast forward from 2010 — our small group is now H-town. With 2 locations, it’s the most award winning and featured gym in Houston.

Has it been a smooth road?
No business is ever smooth. As we grew, so did our staff. Learning to manage not only all the members, but staff too was a big learning curve.

Then, staff would leave to start their own gym, take members, and we would rebuild.

This process duplicates about every 2 years.

Learning to stay on top of things is one of the toughest parts. Especially as a small business owner, everything that happens, good or bad, we tend to take personally.

In that regard, it’s an emotional roller coaster.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with CrossFit H-town – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
By nature, we are a CrossFit gym. CrossFit is a program that was initially created for firefighters, police officers, and military as way for them to be prepared for anything the job could throw at them. It was so effective, that it spread like fire.

It is a combination of Strength training, gymnastics, plyometric, endurance. We work different energy systems to really get the body to react for the better.

In addition, we offer off shoots of CrossFit: we have H|X which is our conditioning/endurance program. It uses less weights but more intensity.

We offer our SWOD (Strength Workout of the Day) which is our strength program.

We also offer Our Weightlifting program which focus on the sport of weightlifting

Lastly, we have our H|Flow, which is our CrossFit specific Yoga program.

In addition, we offer Nutrition help

As a company, we have been named best in Houston for 2 years, Top 15 CrossFit Gyms in America by SweatRX mag, and Top 50 Gyms in America by MEN’S Fitness mag, in addition to being showcased in numerous media outlets.

We provide smaller class sizes to allow us to work at a more personal way. We have Full Time staff here, which you won’t find at any other CrossFit gym in Houston.

One thing we are proud of is the fact we have more Master’s members than anywhere else. (Masters are aged above 35)

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the fact that our city is so big but feels like a small town. There are unique pockets everywhere! For example, our 1st location is located in the Arts District, which is the largest collective of artists anywhere!

The only thing I would say negative about Houston, is if you don’t have a car, you are screwed. I wish we had better public transportation.
