Meet Thomas Green of DJ Square in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Green.

Thomas, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always had a deep passion for music, DJ’ing had always fascinated me, the creativity, the craft, it’s like telling your own story through a creative expression of musical selections. A few years ago, one of my closest friends was getting ready to graduate college so I went up to celebrate with him. I always joked around with him about wanting to pursue DJ’ing and learning the craft the right way, I just didn’t know where to start. Eventually, I was lead in the right direction as to where to begin. I started off very small, I knew that the process of growing & learning the craft wasn’t an overnight process. I practiced a lot in my room for months. I always wanted honest feedback to better myself. It was hard getting started, I kept faith & around September of 2017 I received a phone call to open up for a DJ who I looked up to not only as a DJ but a brother figure named Scott Summers at Mercy in Houston.

That was the first time I’ve ever DJ’d outside of my room… so could you just imagine my nerves at that moment… yeah it was extremely bad, my nerves that was. Scott gave me a lot of feedback & things to look out for & musical selections, transition tips, etc. to better myself for future bookings. I worked very hard, night in & night out. I prayed a lot, but my trust in God to lead me in the right direction. I wanted to fully pursue the music industry as a DJ & producer, in 2017 I was a full-time restaurant manager at Pappasito’s Cantina. We learn everyday, fast forward here to 2019 I couldn’t be anymore grateful to where I am at this moment & the things I’ve learned, the amount of individuals that have played a role in where I’m at. I wish I could name them all one by one, just to name a few, DJ McDaniels, Mr.Rogers, DJ J-Stone, Cee Watts, DJ Ari, DJ Flywhite, Kiotti, Molo, B-Starr and so so many more I can name.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When my grandmother & great-grandmother were alive they always told me nothing would ever be easy in this life. Trust in God & his path for you, he will never lead you in the wrong direction. For a while, I wasn’t getting booked as much as I thought I should have. That just prompted me to work harder & focus on what I wanted to achieve. I love to support other DJ’s and enjoy the way they move crowds, we all learn from each other. If I have a night off, I will usually go catch multiple DJ’s to support them. I eventually started posting work on social media, via. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat clips, SoundCloud mixes, etc. over a time span of some months, I started to get the traction and some insane opportunities. I DJ every set as it is going to be my last one ever, my parents preached to me, “Always give everything you do 110% and you will always be satisfied with the results.”

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a DJ here based in Houston, Texas. I specialize in the Hip-Hop, R&B, and Latin genres of music. I have a great love for 90’s-2000’s music, it’s the time I grew up in so I felt as that was what I specialized in. I love all genres of music though. Seeing my parents smile & commend me for the things I’ve done & accomplished so far is still very surreal to me, I honestly sometimes shed tears. My grandmother & great-grandmother were huge impacts in my life I really wish they were here to see everything, but I know they are always looking down. As far as setting myself apart from others, I love to be different, expressing myself through music, acapellas on different beats, scratching, just playing with music & not just going from song to song. My overall goal is to make it a fun environment & I don’t want you to forget where you were & that DJ, having fun is number 1 though.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Eventually, I want to get more into the production side, I love DJ’ing with a passion. Imagine producing a record for an artist then it’s played all over. I want to continue to better myself as DJ, a person, and continue to be an example for my younger siblings & those who are coming into this industry too because I know what it was like to be new to something. We learn every single day.
