Meet Thomas Helton of Boomtown Brass Band in Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Thomas Helton.

Thomas, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been a jazz bassist since 1990. Through the years I had played a little bit of early jazz or Dixieland but never really knew much about it or how to play it properly. In 2015 I was talking to some friends of mine about putting a group together to study early jazz. Specifically, pre 1930’s New Orleans style. Sometimes called ragtime, Dixieland, “hot” jazz or traditional jazz. So we put a group together and started practicing.

Seemingly out of nowhere people heard about us and we starting doing performances. We are dedicated to keeping the early days of Americas one true art form, jazz, alive in Houston. Two years later we have become quite popular playing brunches, private parties, festivals, dances, etc…

The original members are Johan Keus – cornet/trumpet,  Doug Wright – clarinet/ saxophone, Ryan Gabbart – trombone, Thomas Helton- tuba/leader, Morris Moon – banjo and Mike Viteri – guitar.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
For the most part, it’s been fun. The difficulties have been finding gigs that pay enough for 6 people.

Boomtown Brass Band – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a band that makes people happy. Any age, they love it. It certainly makes it worthwhile when you see people enjoying themselves every time we perform. We are known for being the only group in Houston dedicated to keeping this specific era of jazz alive and well.

I guess I most proud of my musicians. They are always excited to play, practice or do what3ver it takes to keep us moving forward. We are always trying to recreate the music as accurately as possible.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I guess when you get to do something you love, with friends you love that makes everyone around you happy while you are doing it.
