Today we’d like to introduce you to Thuy Nguyen.
Thuy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a large family in Southwest Houston with a single, widowed, mother, and seven siblings. We were no stranger to the public healthcare system. At a young age, I believe God showed me the need that so many families like ourselves had. I had five older brothers, so naturally, I was a tomboy. I loved sports like basketball, football, and boxing. I got in trouble at a young age because my mother was busy providing for us, and I had only my siblings and peers to look to for guidance. My mother took us to church when I was young, but I had no real understanding of what it was all about. I know her prayers sustained us as a family, and God took care of us despite all of the hardships. She remarried, and we moved to California in my last few years of high school. While in California, prior to graduation, I was recruited to join the Army National Guard. My goal at the time was to be a criminal investigator, so becoming an MP (Military Police)Officer, would be a stepping stone to my goal. Shortly after finishing my basic training/MOS school, I moved back to Houston with my family. I met my future husband while working and going to school, and after almost a year of dating, we realized we were expecting. My plans of becoming a detective soon changed. I was intrigued by the level of confidence the nurses around me had when caring for my baby. I knew at that moment that motherhood was going to be my greatest role. I looked into the area of healthcare in order to do well as a mother, but it was later in my training that I was reminded that the need was great, and the supply was low. After working in the hospital as a nurse for four years and completing grad school, I began working almost independently in urgent care. After working in urgent care for four years, God has blessed me with this amazing opportunity to provide low-cost healthcare and open my own practice in Katy, Texas.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Having children and going to school is quite challenging. I was blessed with family members that would help out from time to time if even for 20 mins for me to drive home from the medical center. Grad school was difficult while working and having a family. You feel like you are missing out on life and special moments. People will doubt your methods. I remember telling a family member that we are distinctly “Christ-centered,” while people may not like that, we are not going to hide the fact. We are Christian by our faith, and it is because of God, we exist. We want to show the “love of God,” it’s really what compels us to do this in the first place, it is our primary goal to treat you as you are which is “loved” and special regardless of your views
Please tell us about Love Thy Neighbor Clinic.
We are a Christian, low cost, walk-in clinic. We offer primary care services like physicals, well-women exams, DOT physicals, and lab work. We also treat acute illnesses like colds, flu, allergies, urinary tract, skin infections, etc. We are low cost and transparent, you will not receive a bill from us later on, you will pay for services the same day, and there will be no surprises.
We look at each person as a whole; if you want, we will pray with and/or for you. We love to find great deals for you, like a family member or neighbor, we pride ourselves on getting your medications and specialist visits at lower prices.
Why do we go above and beyond for you? Because it is our great desire to see you value your own health, physically, mentally, and spiritually.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
When my mother took us to Hanna Barbera Land (waterpark). We didn’t have much, but my mom sure knew how to show us a great time.
