Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiara Matthews.
Tiara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story began when I was a teenager. I struggled with really accepting myself and did not feel as though anyone really loved me for me. Fighting all the time to get the approval of everyone or to feel as though someone actually loved me; I allowed myself to be manipulated by men that would come into my life and would find myself in repeated abusive or toxic relationships from the age of 16 until the age of 26. Throughout that time I had graduated from college with a bachelors degree in psychology and I was a mother of two wonderful children, however, I was still involved in toxic relationships that left me feeling broken and lacked self-esteem and self-love for myself.
It wasn’t until I was kicked out with my children and living out of my car that I decided enough was enough; and that I had to change my life around in order for my children to see that their mother was not weak and that I would do anything to make sure they were safe. For years, I tried to get help but found it very difficult to find the help I needed. A lot of community officials to look into counseling or if I didn’t have a place to live the I should try a local women’s shelter, but that was not the help or advice I was looking for. I needed someone to hold my hand and tell me that it was going to be ok and show me how to start healing and how to make my life better. That was the moment that I realized that there wasn’t a lot of hands-on help with a woman would need in order to properly heal herself after she has experienced toxic and abusive relationships.
I started researching and thinking of different ways that I could reach broken women around the world and to help heal their broken hearts and give them the tools necessary in order to mend their lives back together so that they would be able to finally break that toxic cycle that they are currently stuck in. Since then I have started a podcast that is available on apple podcast, podbean, and stitcher in order to teach broken women how to renew and empower themselves after experiencing toxic and abusive relationships. Currently, I am working with a team in order to start my first non-profit organization in order to help women who have escaped from domestic abuse relationships by helping them relocate and pay for their living space for 3-6 months, helping find employment and schooling, and helping to provide resources to their family to help keep them going back.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road at all. Even though I have been able to get out of my toxic relationship, the abuse still finds its way to enter back into my life because I had a child while in that relationship. There have been moments where I would feel overwhelmed because I was trying to make sure I had my life together because I felt as though I couldn’t help others if I couldn’t help myself in my own situation. I also struggled with figuring out what I wanted to call my organization because I wanted something that would appeal to these women and not just myself. I had to rebrand a few times and really study the target market and come up with a different method in order to really reach my target audience. Knowing what your audience needs and how to better serve them is very important because if you say or do something without the right target audience in mind then you might have to start over and go back to the drawing board and try again.
The Renewed Woman – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The name of my business is called The Renewed Woman. I use my life experiences and education to teach women who are broken after being involved in toxic and abusive relationships to renew and empower themselves so they can break this vicious cycle and be free to live their lives without abuse. The main thing that I am most proud of is being able to use my non-profit organization to change women’s lives and to give them the hope that they desire and to reach out and give them a helping hand. What sets me apart regular therapist or counselors or even women shelters is that I have actually experienced what these women have gone through. I know first hand how to exactly give them what they need and how to assist them.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment has been when women message me and tell me that although they are going through a lot in their life, they find my story and my message inspiring and to keep going. There have been a lot of times that I felt as though no one would hear what I was saying or couldn’t relate to me. But to receive those messages unexpectedly and to be reassured that I am doing that is impacting women to heal and love themselves means the world to me.
