Today we’d like to introduce you to Ticara “Cali” King.
Ticara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been cooking ever since I could remember. Growing up in Los Angeles, I’d be in the kitchen with my grandmother watching her cook literally everything from scratch. When I turned 30, I began meal prepping for myself and some friends. I lost a lot of weight (100 lbs. to be exact) and decided to open up for more clients. The more I cooked for friends, the more they realized I could cook more than just healthy food. I began my YouTube channel showcasing my meals and of course my personality. It took off! After that people wanted me to cook for them personally like for date nights and group functions.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being in the food and hospitality industry is NOT easy. I’m a perfectionist so every meal I prepare has to be exact or I won’t serve it. My biggest obstacle has been trying to please everyone’s request but also limiting my services so that I don’t become overwhelmed.
Please tell us about your work.
Cooking Like Cali is my baby. It’s not just another catering company. I love cooking, it’s my passion and it shows. I provide much needed energy to my clients along with my food. I’m most proud of my unwillingness to fit into a box. Although I do cater, while I am hosting date nights for couples I engage and it’s never a boring moment. We have fun in ANY kitchen. My cooking show gives a glimpse of who I am in the kitchen but people feel like they know me and I love that. I want that! It’s helps me keep going.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have the BEST support system. My group of friends who call themselves PGG and ChaCha. My photographer/videographer Eric sends me food links all the time to study. My family, my brother Red. My doula Tasha keeps me grounded. My fiancé!! He will wake up and see my to-do list and jump on it before me. My kids are my backbone. There’s not one person around me who doesn’t rep my brand like it’s theirs. I owe it all to them.
