Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Turner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tiffany. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
On June 19, 2017, I was planning the Grand Opening of a food truck that my husband and I purchased. We decided to have a soft opening for close family and friends. I was starting this food business while working full time as an educator in a public school. This was supposed to be a pivotal moment in my life and little did I know that it was going to be just that. I started preparing the food that I was serving for my family and friends when I decided to crank up the grill in the food truck. In a matter of seconds, the food truck was engulfed in flames and I was rushed to the emergency with 2nd and 3rd degree burns. While sitting in the hospital I realized that life is short and that I needed to pursue my passion before my time is up. I decided my life-long goal was to have a daycare center that didn’t just babysit children but actually prepared them for a life full of discovery and learning.
As an educator I saw that many daycares missed an opportunity to ensure that their students were set up for success. Many students enter public schools without a foundation in letter recognition, numeracy fluency and basic life skills. I saw this opportunity as a way to utilize my skills of closing achievement gaps for learners as a way to ensure a successful early childhood program. The road to achieving this goal has been full of excitement, with moments of growth and improvement. The challenges that are ever-changing in this industry keeps me on my toes. The entire experience of starting a daycare has been fulfilling and I look forward to continuing to learn and grow.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road to opening and running a learning center has been full of highs and lows. The struggles that I experienced early in the start of the daycare were getting permits and getting licensed to open. The process should have taken a month but ended up taking three months. This caused an increase in the start-up costs. Another challenge we faced was, hiring the right staff to ensure the vision and goals are accomplished.
Aim High Preparatory LLC – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a STEAM daycare and preschool that focuses on ensuring early childhood learning successes. We do science experiments and learn the fundamental skills needed to ensure life-long learning. We are different from most daycares because we have experienced staff members who understand pedagogy and student learning.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success in my eyes is defined as setting a goal, having an effective plan to obtain the goal, accomplishing the goal and reflecting on ways to improve the process for better results.
