Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Wright and Katherine Hunt.
Tiffany and Katherine, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Katherine and I attended University of Houston College of Pharmacy together. After graduating in 2012, Katherine worked as a pharmacy manager in a retail pharmacy, and I worked in a pharmacy that specialized in preparing sterile medications for home use. After about 3 years in our respective careers, we decided to go into business together and open our own compounding pharmacy.
We have been open for almost 2 years. Owning and growing a business has been quite an adventure. It has been a slow process, but we have definitely seen growth. People in our community know our name. They know the unique and personalized service that we provide. We have enjoyed helping people with their individual medication needs. We specialize in making the medication fit the patient and not the other way around. We’re able to connect with our patients and build relationships with them. This aspect of the business is actually one of the most rewarding. We get to hear about what’s going on in all aspects of their lives. It’s that kind of interaction with our clientele that truly speaks to the value of being small business owners, and we enjoy every minute of it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. The growth of the business has been slow. We have faced several obstacles, both expected and unexpected. For instance, we chose the Clear Lake area to open our compounding pharmacy because it is not as saturated as other areas. Despite that, we are still facing real competition from other pharmacies in our industry that are in all parts of the Houston area, Texas, and even other states. It is also really hard to get our name out there. We have had to make some tough decisions regarding the types of marketing and advertising tools to utilize. Another struggle that we faced is just simply getting proper guidance on what we did and did not need to actually start the business. In retrospect, we could have saved a substantial amount of money in marketing costs, inventory, and other areas with a more conservative start-up.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gulf Coast Compounding Pharmacy – what should we know?
Our motto is customized medication, personalized care. As compounding pharmacists, we make medication from scratch that is specifically intended to meet the needs of individual patients. We create medication at a certain dose or dosage form that is not commercially available. For example, if a patient can’t swallow pills, we can make their medication in cream form. We can also make medication without specific dyes and fillers for those with certain allergies to those ingredients. We make everything from medicated popsicles for people to chicken-flavored antibiotics for our four-legged friends.
As a company, we are most proud of the relationships we have established with our patients and prescribers. We have worked extremely hard to promote our service, and people in our community have grown to trust us and rely on us. The feedback we have received from our patients has been immensely gratifying. We are blessed to be able to provide medication to patients that improves their quality of life. Our compounded medication has kept a small child from having to go to the ER. It has given another patient enough pain relief so that she can leave her home and spend time with friends. We genuinely care about each patient and their needs. We serve our patients with compassionate hearts combined with state-of-the art compounding technology that allows us to make the highest quality products possible.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
As compounders, pharmaceutical knowledge and creativity to apply that knowledge are necessary in our industry. As small business owners, having patience and persistence is vital.
