Meet Tim Neckar of runnerOne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Neckar.

Tim, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Being a Middle School PE Teacher, I was looking for a way to supplement my income by doing something that I love, RUNNING! I didn’t want to do the Personal Trainer at the Health Club, and I didn’t want to be the running coach at the track just standing there with a stopwatch. So, I decided I could combine the two and be a Personal Running coach. I could run WITH the client! No one else was doing this. So, I started out putting a 1000 or so flyers on cars at Memorial (this was before the internet). I got one response …

Next, at the time there was a running column in the Houston Chronicle. She had written about me before about an ultra I did, so I asked her to put in a little plug for me. She did, and I got about three or four responses. Next, I put an ad and Health and Fitness magazine. I got a few responses here and there. Once I get my website up back in 2002, then things start to happen. People could Google me and I was getting repeat clients and referrals.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest thing was when people did not follow their schedule that I gave them, I took it personally. I learned over the years that you can tell them what to do, but they have to realize they have to do it themselves. Action deathly speak louder than words. It’s kind of like the old saying, “you can lead a horse to water… ”

runnerOne-what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am the only running coach and Houston, or anywhere for that fact that runs with each of his clients. Stride for stride. I train beginners to ultramarathoners at just about any pace. No one is ever too slow.

What I am most proud of is seen beginners blossom into runners and see the happiness in their eyes that they have done something amazing.

I’m also proud is that people believe in me and give me the opportunity to let me coach them.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The success is that I love this job and I feel that my clients feel my passion for what I do. I always tell them, “if you’re not successful, then I’m not successful”

I used to work at the school where he is the coach. And for a FACT on field days he ran with the kids all day long from start to finish;literally all day long he’s the only one I’ve ever known to do this and make it look like it’s nothing. He’s a person you want to have as a coach. Coach Neckar he’s an amazing human being and amazing co-worker in a friend.
