Meet Tonia Odunsi of Tonia O. Artistry in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tonia Odunsi.

Tonia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I got into makeup around my sophomore year in college. I was looking for a seasonal job, and honestly cosmetic companies were higher paying then retail jobs. I had always been naturally good at doing hair and makeup, so I went for it!

My first company was Sephora. I worked through a holiday and gained my initial experience, then I was randomly scouted in the mall for a position at Bare Escentuals. I worked there for about two years before moving onto MAC cosmetics. Working at MAC is where I really grew a passion, and love for makeup.

I worked there for three years until I graduated college. I graduated with a computer engineering degree and got a job, and for the first time, I realized an office setting was NOT for me. So… I saved up some money, quit and took a leap of faith… and that’s how I got to where I am now.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Surprisingly, I have to say it’s been a smooth road. Smoother than I expected for sure, and I’m so thankful. Within the first few months of quitting I had gained a nice clientele. People trusted my work, and some of my clients from MAC followed me, so I was super thankful.

I remember crying in church because I couldn’t believe that I was working for myself, and I was actually making a stable income.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m an “MUA”! Short for a make-up artist, I specialize in bridal artistry, and I’m known for perfecting skin, butttt I’m able to perform any look a client may want with the exception of special effects makeup.

I think the biggest thing that has set me apart from other artist is my genuine passion. I don’t even wear makeup, I’m not a product junky, I get all my happiness solely in making my clients happy. I literally LOVE what I do.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’m honest, open, and genuine. If I don’t think something will work, I will tell you. If I’m booked the day of your event, I will gladly refer you to another artist.

I love what I do, and though I’m blessed to get paid for it, I’m not moved by the money. I appreciate that in 99% of my reviews people mention my personality. Because I try to make your makeup application a comfortable experience.

My website says makeup artist turned therapist… It’s a joke, but I want my clients to know it’s an open table and they can talk to me about anything!
