Today we’d like to introduce you to Tosin Alagun.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tosin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My creative journey as a Photographer started on my Eight Birthday in Nigeria. I got a View Master as a gift and that was my first exposure to understanding how photography impacted me and others around me. After graduating college, I decided to put my heart and energy into showcasing just how beautiful and positive People of Color are to me. I chose to focus my Photography towards showcasing the African Diaspora on Museum Walls and creative spaces.
Photography fortunately led me to meeting the right friends, sharing ideas and executing a plan to create Afro Basel. Afro Basel serves as a creative space for the African Diaspora in Houston to showcase their creative talent. Once a month, Afro Basel is open to Painters, Photographers, Musicians, Dancers, Comedians, Fashion Designers and Models to showcase their incredible talent amongst the Afro Basel audience, peers and supporters.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Time management has been the most challenging obstacle I have faced personally in 2019. Working as a Medical IT Technician, a Photographer and Afro Basel co-ordinator can be very time consuming, but it’s a challenge I embrace. I’d much rather be busy chasing my dreams than bored with no ambitious goals to accomplish.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of? What sets you apart from others?
I am a Photographer here in Houston, TX and I am passionate about capturing people being themselves in a positive and creative setting. I love using my talent to bring the absolute best out of people, brands and businesses. I love working with new clients and trying out different interesting projects. You can find me on Instagram at @Tosinn or contact me through email: Alagunt@gmail.com.
I am also one of the creators of Afro Basel, an incredible space for the African Diaspora. A space where you can experience live music, art, comedy, dance performance, fashion, and more all in one night. Come out to eat, dance, and have an amazing evening once a month with us! You can find out more by visiting us on Instagram at @Afrobasel. Feel free to submit your work if you would like to be a part of the show to Afrobaselinfo@gmail.com.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I would love to thank Joy Maduka, DJ Heaven Mozart, Tobe Mokolo, Bosun, SAID Institute, Afrovibes Radio and everyone who has positively influenced the growth of Afro Basel and my creative journey as a photographer.
I would especially love to thank all the amazing talented Houston Artists that embrace the environment and choose to showcase their work. Afro Basel would not be on its 5th chapter without the abundance of talent in Houston from the African Diaspora.
