Meet Trailblazer Amanda Bell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Bell.

Amanda, please share your story with us.
Starting out in cosmetic retail at the age of 18, Amanda knew she had found her passion in making girls and women feel beautiful. Leaving behind Art school and an Interior Design degree was never something she had planned. Switching from oil paints and studying the history or furniture to lipstick and highlighter was the best medicine for this wandering soul.

Working as a manager for Aveda for the beginning of her career, Amanda learned her love for natural beauty and released her hippie vibes. Moving on as a manager at Sephora for close to 7 years, Amanda realized there was so much more to makeup than a tinted moisturizer and a nude gloss. It was here she realized her schooling would come into play. After all, she is an artist.

Amanda spends her days working at a local retailer and taking out of store appointments and referrals. In her free time, Amanda raises her twin daughters with her wife and loves to travel.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Working full time and creating a business clearly doesn’t sound easy. It’s not! Try throwing in twin two and a half-year-old girls and a hectic traveling schedule.

Crazy!

My best advice is to find your village. Find other strong women that want to support you and are on your same road of success. Use any and every opportunity to network and make your name be known. Maybe not to benefit you at the moment but do good and good will come to you.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hometown Beauty – what should we know?
I am most proud of my knowledge of over 50 brands of makeup. How products are applied and work best for all different skin types. Skincare is huge and certain treatments require more attention and love when applying makeup and choosing a product. I am fully versed in most.

I am a one-woman business. I am known for my speed of application.

What sets me apart from others is that I become your friend. This is a professional industry that can be overwhelming to many. I want my clients to feel comfortable with me.

We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
There are so many women doing the same thing. We are all talented in our own ways. Our clients will relate to us differently. As many makeup artists that are out there, clients need to be able to feel comfortable and relate to the artist and her work.

So, the competition is fierce but there’s always something to set you apart from others and that makes you unique!
