Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelina Villarreal.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a native Houstonian that has worked in the local real estate market for a little over 20 years. I began working at a real estate firm as a receptionist at age 17 and shortly after graduating high school, decided to become a licensed real estate professional. Little did I know, that my boss at my very first job would become one of the most valuable individuals in my life. When I set goals, he was the one telling me higher… even higher. While in college, I left this job and went on to work for one of Houston’s most prestigious real estate firms. After having my daughter, I took a hiatus from college to raise her. I worked at this real estate firm for 15 years while raising my daughter as a single mother. Finally, the time came when I felt my daughter was old enough for me to juggle work and school, so I re-enrolled in college. This was the hardest thing I have ever done and required the most sacrifice for both my daughter and I. My goal was to finish as quickly as possible without having to retake any courses so I put my head down and I did not look up until it was done. During my final semester, I took time to reflect on the impact of what I had accomplished. I had several girlfriends that were raising children alone see what I was doing and so also went back to complete their degree. I saw my daughter become more focused and determined to succeed in school. I am the first in my immediate family to graduate college and I did so Summa Cum Laude from Business School. Everything I have accomplished, I did so with the unconditional help and support from the people I call My Village.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For most, life is riddled with challenges and mine has been no different. I had personal and emotional deep-rooted struggles that I had to overcome to find my confidence and strength. Without these, my setbacks would prevail and nothing would be accomplished. This was a part of my life that my mentor helped me find the most clarity. There was never enough time in the day to handle all of my responsibilities. I had to be at peace allowing certain things to fade into the background. I could not focus on what I could not do but only on what I could. There were people in my life that would point out my shortcomings constantly and so I had to let them go. If anything distracted me from my focus, I had to let it go. My relationship with my daughter suffered for a portion of the time I was in school. I struggled to find balance among the demands of my responsibilities.
My advice for young women is to build a solid foundation which includes the people that make up your Village. Friends, family, colleagues, lovers… choose wisely. You will have to make some hard decision. It doesn’t always mean excommunicate people but manages your associations. People can build you up but they can also tear you down. Most importantly, nothing is permanent. You have the power to change whatever you desire to. If you feel weak, look at your Village and find someone who can guide you to your strength. Get comfortable with sacrifice because nothing worth having is easy!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am a residential real estate agent that focuses on leasing, selling, buying, and investment property. My long history in the industry equips me with an extensive understanding of past market trends which helps me to more accurately explain current trends. My goal is to provide luxury services to all of my clients by streamlining the process and eliminating the pains of uncertainty.
Only my family and close friends know how much I love playing the violin. I started playing at age 6 and continue to play to this day. So, when I am not selling Houston, I am playing my violin or cycling with my team, Pelando Diente. We are currently training every weekend to prepare for the Bike MS: Valero Ride the River in October.
So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
Young high school ladies should understand that there are lots of grants and scholarships available specifically for you. Be proactive and talk with your school advisers for help as well as contacting the financial aid offices at the colleges and trade schools. Many women don’t attend or drop out due to financial circumstances when there is help available. You can also shop for employers who offer tuition assistance.
The Big Data industries lack female representation and they are aggressively pursuing women to enter the job market. They are working collaboratively with colleges and trade schools to create opportunities for woman. Take advantage of this, now is the time!
