Meet Trailblazer Carrington Barfield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrington Barfield.

Carrington, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Chaos and Coffee in May of 2018, mostly as a way to build my portfolio in the marketing world, but also simply because I needed something to keep me busy when I came home from work each day. I was living alone and working 7-5 each day in an office setting, so when I got home, I just wanted to relax and do something creative after being stuck in a cubicle all day. I honestly didn’t even know what kind of blog I wanted Chaos and Coffee to be when I first created it. I just knew I wanted to write and share about things that made me happy. After a few months, I started realizing my posts were mostly about fashion and about sharing different looks and trends I was into wearing. I had a brand reach out to me after a few months, wanting to collaborate with my blog and it just kind of took off from there! I’ve learned a lot from just reading and doing research online; reading what other bloggers have done and taken any advice they can give me. I think it’s natural to sometimes be your biggest critic and always strive to go one step further, do one thing better; but when I think about it, I am so incredibly happy with how far Chaos and Coffee has come.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think everyone faces their fair share of struggles and obstacles; starting something from scratch, creating a brand, trying to grow it, etc. is never easy. There are some days when I get down and feel discouraged because I don’t get as many views on a blog post I worked for days trying to perfect, or when I post a photo on Instagram and it doesn’t get hardly any engagement at all. It can really get to you and leave you feeling discouraged and dispirited if you let it. So, my advice to anyone looking to embark on their own journey and take the leap would be to focus solely on your end goal. What do you want in the end? Where do you see yourself 5, 10, 15 years down the line? When starting a business and working to build a brand, you have to be in it for the long run. If you don’t have faith in the brand that it will sprout and grow, why should anyone else?

We’d love to hear more about Chaos and Coffee.
My blog, Chaos and Coffee, is a fashion and lifestyle blog where I post weekly about fashion trends, outfit ideas, and lifestyle subjects that spring into my mind. I’m proud of my blog because it’s something I built by myself and have stuck with. It was hard to do so, especially in the beginning when I was first starting out and the only people who read or cared about my posts were my mom and my boyfriend. But I’m both proud and happy that I stuck with it and that I now have something to show for it.

What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Set goals for yourself and don’t stop until you reach them. A lot of people are going to make you feel like you should settle for mediocrity simply because they don’t want to see you succeed. I’ve come across that so much both in my personal life, as well as in my professional path thus far. You have to be able to envision your end goal – the thing you want most in the world – and do whatever is in your power to get there. You have to have resilience and perseverance to brush off the countless attempts that don’t work so that when you finally find the one thing that does, you’ll know it was all worth it and you can have even more pride in yourself that you stuck with it and were able to make it happen. The most important thing to remember and keep in mind though is that it WILL happen. You just have to be prepared to get it there yourself.
