Meet Trailblazer Dr. Olga Bachilo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Olga Bachilo.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Bachilo. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Mink, Belarus and I moved to Houston, Texas with my family in 1998. My father is a research scientist and was given an opportunity at Rice University to do research. When we moved, we thought this was just a temporary situation. In the past we have lived in Sweden where my father also did research. We fell in love with Texas and I completed all of my education within the state. I went to Bellaire High school and then attended the prestigious Rice University in Houston, TX completing my undergraduate degree with majors in Bioengineering and Biochemistry. I obtained my medical degree at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine in College Station, TX and Temple, TX, and then completed an integrated Plastic Surgery residency at University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. After completing my training, I returned home to Houston to start my practice. My current practice Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa is within a mile of my high school, and I often drive by Bellaire high school on my way to work.

I decided to pursue plastic surgery because I was so fascinated by the field. I knew I wanted to have a specialty that I could be hands-on in helping my patients, and in plastic surgery we have such an amazing variety. Although I do very little reconstructive surgery now, during training it was amazing to be able to reconstruct a woman’s breast after breast cancer, repair a cleft lip and perform a tummy tuck all on the same day.

In my practice at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa, I mostly focus on cosmetic procedures such as mommy makeover, tummy tucks, breast augmentations and breast lift, facelift and eyelid surgery, but I still accept insurance and often perform breast reconstruction, medically necessary breast reductions and body contouring for patients after massive weight loss. I love what I do and I always say that it does not feels to me like work and more of a calling.

Has it been a smooth road?
I often look back and am amazed at how far I have come, but I am also looking forward to even a longer journey ahead. As an immigrant woman with poor English, it was extremely challenging to overcome biases and discouragements from others. In highs school, I felt alone, others had their established group of friends and support networks while I had to start from scratch after moving to a new country. I just focused on school work and cherished friendships with other international students and those who accepted me into their groups. I was accepted into Rice University, despite many doubting my abilities. During college, I kept an open mind and pursued every opportunity that was open to me. I participated in multiple summer research and medical mentorship programs that further solidified my desire to go into medicine. I had friends with similar interests and we were able to pursue our journeys together. In medical school, I had the best time of my life. The friendships that I acquired during medical school are the strongest I have to this date. I would advise any woman to not give up on her goals. Don’t listen to the negativity and discouraging statements, find mentors and surround yourself with people who have similar interests and goals, and together you will be stronger to continue your journey.

We’d love to hear more about Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa.

So much of the media coverage is focused on the challenges facing women today, but what about the opportunities? Do you feel there are any opportunities that women are particularly well positioned for?
I agree that there are some challenges facing women, but I think it’s in our hands to overcome them. As women, we have our unique communication skills that help us in our work and interpersonal communications. We are more patient, more caring, more willing to admit when we are wrong, more humble and more likely to doubt ourselves. However, these are not weaknesses, but rather strengths. These traits help us advance further and seek opportunities to get better and improve ourselves. When one has too much self-confidence and thinks they know it all, it completely shuts them down from looking for ways to improve. As women, I feel we are more open-minded and are able to take advantage of opportunities that come our way.

There are also a ton of resources specifically for women, including special programs and grants for starting business and more.
