Meet Trailblazer Jaimie Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaimie Adams.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, I started at the young age of 13; I started out braiding hair. Then, I can remember my mom coming home in tears one day; she went to the salon and had an extremely bad hair experience. So, she then called her friend from Los Angeles; my birthplace; to come and do her hair. Pebbles made me sit and watch her do the weave installation from beginning to end. When she finished, she told me to never let anyone mess up my mom’s hair again. From that point on, I wasn’t just braiding hair but also doing weave installations. I was able to help my mom with bills and provide school clothes for myself. Times were hard and me working at such a young age helped tremendously.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I can admit the journey has not been easy. I have had so many ups and downs; times when I felt like I wanted to give up. I started at a young age and had never been to a hair salon myself, personally. So, everything I did was through a learning experience. I worked 9-5 jobs and would come home to do hair after work and on the weekends. A lot of long days and nights, it wasn’t until my mother became ill that I took my career seriously. I researched and found Paul Mitchell beauty College. Whoever said beauty school was a cake walk; lied! I mean I knew how to do hair but not the technical way. So, a lot of reading, studying, writing essays and praying for strength. I was a full-time student. Working two jobs when I could get hours and doing hair on the side. Many sleepless nights!!! I survived! I wanted to quit but I was fighting to become a better person. I have definitely had some hardships with business taking lessons the hard way. Such as moving faster than my resources allowed. My advice to young women in the hair industry doesn’t be afraid to start small. You have to start somewhere. Just think of it has small steps towards a huge milestone!

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hair by Eimia’J – what should we know?
Well, I’m a cosmetologist; and I love what I do! I specialize in growing and taking care of hair. When people tell me they can’t grow their hair or it doesn’t grow long. That’s a challenge to me! I’m also known for doing sew-ins or weave installations, I have been doing them for 17 years. I like to stay current so my clients are satisfied with the new trends.

I believe the one thing I’m most proud of is the “Hurricane Harvey Beauty Squad.” I contacted four beauticians and a barber to come out and help me do hair for the hurricane victims. It was so beautiful to be able to give back to our community in the tragic national disaster. I’m also proud of becoming an owner of my own hairline before the age of 30. I started my hair extension line “ButterCup Extensions”!!!

I think one thing that sets me apart is my customer service, my review really speaks for me. I pride myself in making sure I listen to my clients and they are pleased when they leave the salon.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
I definitely feel like my entire childhood set me up for success. I watched my mother and father work hard, especially my mom! She was superwoman to me, at least. I always wanted to be as successful if not more successful. She saw the talent in me and made it her business to help me along the way. She made me start charging people because she saw my talents being used up for free. Then, going through hard times made me a hustler and a go-getter! I had no choice but to go into the hair industry; it was in my blood. All the people I had sitting on my couch when I was outside playing but inside slaying!!! It was a setup! All God’s Plan!!!!
