Today we’d like to introduce you to Nelly Villanueva and Victoria Jobe.
Nelly and Victoria, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Nelly started making a hair mask oil for personal use. When moms in my area started asking me if they could purchase it, I soon started making and selling it. After a few months, I started messing with clays and botanicals. I loved the idea of all-natural face masks and body products. I called my little sister Vicky to help me start a business and come up with new products since we both have different skin and hair types. Together, we came with MixNMasks!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a pretty smooth ride for the most part. I think having a business partner who’s like-minded and goal-oriented has helped tremendously. Starting a business is fruitless and stressful in the beginning but throughout the yr, we’ve have found our strengthens and weaknesses and continue to build from there. For young ladies just starting out, don’t have extremely high expectations, set an achievable goal especially in the beginning and take it one step at a time.
We’d love to hear more about MixNMasks.
We did start selling hair masks oils first and it’s what gave us a great start. Now, we’re definitely more known for our customizable face masks. We usually all-natural clays and botanicals to help combat different skin issues. We are most proud of being able to help others while doing what we love. We give percentages of face masks sales to different organizations throughout the year.
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
In the business world, it’s typically male-dominated and sometimes we feel women aren’t taken as serious for whatever reasons. So, we feel women have to work twice as hard to be noticed and taken seriously. Luckily for us, times are changing and more people are accepting of women as leaders and bosses in the corporate/business world.
