Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Polansky.
Rebecca, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
From a very young age, I enjoyed putting an “artsy” touch on everything from school projects to hosting parties for friends. I graduated college, secured a 9-5 job, got married, bought a house, and had a baby – checked all my boxes. But, as time went on, I wanted an outlet for my creative side. When I transitioned to working less hours, it was a perfect time to stretch my right-brain muscles. I was presented with an opportunity to partner with my mother in her sugar cookie business. We have always been close and are so excited to be working together!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Adding another component to my life has definitely been a challenge and a balancing act. Family, work and small business owner all need a certain amount of attention – different amounts at different times. Fortunately, with this business, I will have the luxury of putting in more or less time, molding it to what I want or need in different stages of my life.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Gimme Some Sugar – what should we know?
Gimme Some Sugar is a custom sugar cookie business. We specialize in sugar cookies and sugar cookies only. A lot of time was spent testing (eating!) recipes to come up with what we feel is the best. We create designs for engagements, baby showers and birthdays, among other things. They are a perfect addition for special milestones in people’s lives. Everyone loves cookies, so it’s not too hard a sell! One of my first contributions was to re-brand and increase our marketing through social media which has proved to be fruitful. But, working with the customer to come up with something they are really excited about is even more rewarding. I enjoy seeing the faces of the customers when they see the finished product.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Support from groups, online or otherwise, who serve as teachers, mentors, and cheerleaders is invaluable. They can be used to share ideas, commiserate with struggles and celebrate successes. Also, you don’t have to be perfect – not as an employee, not as a wife, not as a mother, and not as a cookier (yes, that’s the term we use). You can only do what you can do. Be confident in your worth. Learn to say “no” when you need to. It’s not worth the stress. Life is too short!
