Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Pepper.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Brad Booker discovered me at a restaurant in Evansville, Indiana. He had just moved with his wife and thought I was funny and offered me a job on the spot to be his Morning Show Producer! I worked my way up from Producer to his Co-host and moved with him to Houston, Texas in July of 2008. I have been doing mornings in Houston since. Ten years this year!
I have always worked with the community. My mom raised us to have a servant’s heart and taught us to always remember how lucky and blessed we were and to remember there are a lot of people out there who aren’t as lucky. It is our duty to help them.
It was after our brother passed away in 2010 that my Sister, her dear friend Jamie and myself started the Andrew Pepper Foundation. This organization has built a boarding school in Thailand, built homes in the Dominican Republic and helped with the final costs for families that have lost children and siblings.
I have worked with over 26 organizations here in the Houston area and have been an ambassador for the Houston Marathon for six years and worked with anti-bullying campaigns in various schools throughout Houston.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Losing our brother in 2010 broke me. I didn’t know how to deal with the pain and the loss and the route I took initially wasn’t the right one. It was self-destructive and didn’t help me deal with my grief. It only postponed the pain. Finding the Marathon and an outlet for my anger and hurt was the best thing that ever happened to me. It gave me a voice to speak to people who were suffering also and helped me deal with what I was going through. From there, things just really took off and I reached out to every organization I had ever wanted to be a part of and they welcomed me with open arms.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Host Mix 96.5 Entercom Communications – what should we know?
I host the Morning Show on Mix 96.5. Most people know me for the bit “Whatcha Doin at the Courthouse”.
The Andrew Pepper Foundation is something that I am deeply proud of and not because of the work that I have done but because of the work, my sister has done. She has truly built this from the ground up and it is amazing!
My Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Campaign back in 2012 is another shining moment for me. We raised $50,000 and I shaved my head along with 30 other Houstonians.
Running my first Houston Half Marathon is something I will always remember. I never thought I could run that far and being able to do that and cross it off my list was a very proud day.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My mom. She is truly my hero. She raised three kids alone. Grew up in the home of an alcoholic. She strived to always give back, even when we didn’t have anything to give. She has lost bother her parents. Her sister. Her son. Her granddaughter but she had NEVER lost her faith!
My sister. She took has risen above everything that we have been handed and she has done it with a smile on her face and inspiration and kindness in her heart.
