Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheronna “Ro” Taylor.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sheronna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Southlawn, some projects, on the southside of Houston, Texas, my cousin and I used to walk to the corner store every day! I LOVED it! Not just because of the snacks, we would get, it was the fact I would get to pass by Ms. Margaret’s barbershop. She had EVERYBODY in there.
THEN, I would go back to my granny’s house, where women from all over the Southside would come to get their hair laid! Yep! In the kitchen!! She worked in a salon and had her own, but before that, she worked from home to help raise her grandchildren. I got to see the best of BOTH worlds! I knew then, THAT’S what I wanted!
It didn’t matter that it was the projects or the hood. There was drugs, shootings, people going to jail, females fighting and young single mothers struggling to go to school and raise their kids. None of that mattered!
All I saw was men, women, and children walking out of both of these places laughing and smiling! Feeling good about themselves and the life that was given to them. I wanted that! The opportunity to empower, restore give life to people and be creative at the same time.
I graduated from Barbara Jordan High School for Careers with my Cosmetology License in 2002. I had plans to attend a barber college and travel the world learning different techniques and trends, but my parents had different plans. I had to go to college. While at Texas Southern University, I joined the Ocean of Soul Marching Band. I didn’t graduate, BUT I met some amazing people! One of them being my husband.
As I started my family, I chose to put my plans on hold while my husband and I set a foundation for our family. Being young and married with children and dreams was challenging, but we pushed through.
After a 16 year cycle of working a 9 to 5, assisting other stylist and styling part-time at home, I resigned from my last job on June 27, 2017. At the time, I was a Teaching Assistant during the week and a stylist on the weekend. As bad as I wanted to walk in my passion and purpose, I was filled with fear, until I got an offer to work at a salon.
I worked at that particular salon for about six months on commission then booth rent before I received a vision to open Fresh Hair by Ro. 30 days later, I had the keys to my own salon.
I’ve been operating in Salon’s by JC in the Pearland Town Center for a year and a half now. I deeply feel because I honored the path I was given and was obedient to the vision I saw, I’ve been graced. The 16 years I thought I missed out on, have been given back to me in growth over the past two years.
I’m experiencing the dream “Young Ro” had at 8 years old. EVERYDAY l get to see people leaving out of the salon happy and evolving into who they were created to be.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road was and is a journey worth traveling. It’s almost like traffic and construction on the freeways in Houston. Frustrating and exhausting. Pulling up Waze to find an alternative route. But once you get in a place of none resistance, trust the process and put on a good playlist, you’ll find yourself arriving at your destination in a timely manner in peace.
I had a plan that didn’t go like I envisioned, therefore, I fell off track and like I lost myself at times, but I never quit. As I got older and experienced life more, my dream changed. I thought it was the end of the world until I realized my purpose gained valued because of the struggles and lessons along the way. It fueled my passion.
Living in gratitude, having core values and a strong spiritual foundation held me down through every test, struggle, curve or bump in the road.
“I am a student, NOT a victim. I either win or learn.”
I live by this qoute. No matter what happened in my life, I chose to be a student. I learn what I need from every situation and move on! I make sure I celebrate every victory and accomplishment with a grateful heart!
If your plan doesn’t work out the way you envisioned, know that ALL things work out! If you live in gratitude with a positive attitude even when things seem crazy, you will always find yourself winning or learning.
If you take this route, you’ll start to enjoy the experience of seeing the city you live in evolve into a highly functional place where people can get to there destinations faster. Or enjoy seeing parts of Houston you’ve never seen before with the alternative routes on Waze.
We’d love to hear more about Fresh Hair by Ro.
I am a Natural Hair Specialist & Curl Enthusiast. I respect virgin hair and the versatility of its strands! I love how it defies gravity and can be kinky, curly or straight. Virgin hair, better known as natural hair is limitless. I’m known for empowering women and girls by restoring their hair to it’s healthiest form, giving them beautiful styles and reminding them of their importance and value by servicing them with gratitude.
The thing that I’m most proud of when comes the Fresh Hair Brand is the growth and consistency with the services and experience at the salon. One day, I sat a read every single one of my reviews and saw that everyone has the same experience. They all receive great service in a timely manner, leave educated and see results. It causes Fresh Hair to have recurring clients and amazing relationships.
Which women have inspired you in your life?
My inspiration comes from many important sources in my life. My grandmother introduced me to this industry! Her example has a major part in the building of the Fresh Hair Brand. My mother and her perseverance is the inspiration to most of the values I hold dear to me.

Thank You Ro for sharing your story. Just last night I almost lost faith in my ability to see my aspirations come to life. I had given up on myself and erased my vision board. I struggle daily with doubt and the fear of not being Enough. Although the doubt and fear are still very present, you have breathed a breath of “Fresh” air into me. You are the physical representation of a Nugget, a good sign that wellbeing abounds. And for that I appreciate you for sharing your journey. Congratulations on your many successes and accomplishments.
