Meet Trevor Brown of Lone Pint Brewery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Brown.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started homebrewing in college in 1993. This turned into a hobby for me. In 2007 my sister and I (Heather Niederhoffer) decided to open a brewery. I turned my garage into a small scale commercial brewery, producing 20 gallons at a time. We brewed nearly every weekend for years, perfecting the recipes and giving most of the beer away to friends.

In 2012 we finally opened and produced our first batch of beer. A few months later we created Yellow Rose and it now dominates our production schedule. Through all of this, we have kept to traditional brewing roots, using whole cone hops without filtration and pasteurization.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Dealing with distributors has been the biggest challenge. Texas beer laws are a close second.

Please tell us about Lone Pint Brewery.
We specialize in hoppy beers (IPAs, DIPAs, etc.) and generally strong beers. Lone Pint is best known for Yellow Rose SMaSH IPA. We were one of the first users of the Mosaic hop in Texas, creating a single hop IPA with it that now is our #1 seller. We use whole cone hops (unique to Texas and most of the US).

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Initially purchased a better chiller. Breweries in Texas live and die by their chiller. The units we have purchased have made all of us lose quite a bit of sleep over the years.

More scrutiny toward our distributor selection. This is extremely important for a small startup brewery and can make or break you early on.
