Today we’d like to introduce you to Ursula Sledge.
Ursula, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to the United States from Germany about 20 years ago. I stumbled upon the German Gift House in Old Town Spring and became a frequent shopper. It symbolized a little piece of home for me. When the owners of the shop wanted to retire, a friend and I purchased the business in 2008. I am now the sole proprietor and I love every minute of it.
Has it been a smooth road?
All in all, it has been a smooth road. A difficult part of being a small business owner is to find team members that are just as excited about your products and your business as you are. This particular business also requires some proficiency in the German language to be able to communicate with our German speaking customers and vendors. Working in close proximity of each other in a small store requires team work and understanding of each other. I am proud to have found a great team that loves to come to work every day as much as I do.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with German Gift House – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
The German Gift House is known for its friendly, enthusiastic atmosphere. We specialize in merchandise made in Germany and German items that are difficult to find anywhere. We carry handmade German woodcrafts such as nutcrackers, cuckoo clocks, incense burners and pyramids. We also carry a wide variety of blown glass ornaments, beer steins, amber jewelry, table linens, and packaged food products. In today’s world, it is difficult to find genuine, handmade products and we fill that niche. The true collector enjoys our products as well as the homesick German “expat” who misses that special childhood candy from Germany. What sets us apart is the love for our products and being able to answer questions our customers may have about German culture and craftsmanship.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I like best about our city is our diversity in cultures and ethnicities. What I like least is the heavy Houston traffic.
