Meet Brad Sewell of Veritas Christian Academy of Houston in Bellaire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brad Sewell.

Brad, before we jump into specific questions about the organization, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am currently Head of School at Veritas. My path to the school started as a history and logic teacher after completing my graduate degree philosophy at Edinburgh University in Scotland. After my wife and I relocated to Houston, we had every intention of moving to the east coast, where I spent many years in Raliegh, North Carolina. However, after three years of teaching, new opportunities emerged for me at Veritas. I served in a variety of roles learning different aspects of school life that have been crucial for my current role. That said, I am completing my fourth year as Head of School. I have been with Veritas for a decade now. Honestly, I never aspired to be a Head of School. I’ve always loved the quest for knowledge and seeing others grow in their understanding.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a mostly smooth road. Each role has challenged me in new ways. In leadership, your personality is tested in different ways that other roles don’t quite expose. That said, the greatest challenge is learning to understand how you lead and manage and how you can become better each day, how you can positively influence others, and be a servant leader.

Please tell us about the organization.
Veritas Christian Academy of Houston is an independent school preparing students for lives of service and learning by providing them a foundation for life in character and scholarship development. Our motto is a ‘Foundation for Life’. What distinguishes us is the combination of values that lay that Foundation. We want to provide our students with a (1) Foundation in Faith, (2) A Foundation in the Arts, (3) A Foundation in Cultural Exposure, and (4) A Foundation in Design Thinking. These elements all combined help distinguish specifically what our students receive and the formation they have before launching to high school and college. We are PreK-8th Grade school, which allows us to focus specifically on developing students in their foundational years.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love most about our city is the ethnic diversity. Our school represents this and is a true reflection of our city. What I like least is that we are too far from mountains and living with excessive humidity during summer.
