Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Vittum.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ballet Center of Houston was opened in 1994 to provide the northwest corridor of Houston with a classical ballet school. For over 20 years we have been producing many many students that have gone on to become a professional dancer, teachers and lovers of the beautiful art form.
Our mission is to provide the highest quality dance training in a family friendly loving environment. Whatever the level a student is we strive to introduce all students to correct training, placement and alignment with a good sense of the body.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In the beginning, we started with 60 students and have steadily grown to over 300 students. At first, it was difficult because our community did not seem to understand the difference between a classical ballet school and a one-stop studio that thinks they can teach all forms of dance in 45 minutes once per week. Classical ballet is the foundation of all forms of dance. Without a solid foundation of ballet becoming a professional dancer is almost impossible.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ballet Center of Houston story. Tell us more about the business.
Our specialty is classical ballet although we offer classes in contemporary, modern and jazz dance as well as a Pilates fusion mat class. We also offer adult ballet classes.
We are most proud of our students that have gone on to professional careers or become teachers. Many of our current teachers were trained by us. Our students have gone on to dance professionally with companies such as American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Texas Ballet Theatre, Colorado Ballet, Ballet Idaho as well as Disney Productions, Dancers on Cruise ships, and in the pop music industry as well as Modern and Contemporary Dance Companies. This is what sets us apart!
-Jared Matthews- Principal dancer Houston Ballet (American Ballet Theatre)
-Elizabeth Keller – Principal Dancer Ballet Idaho (Miami City Ballet)
-Morgan Buchanan – soloist Colorado Ballet
-Jessica Lohr – Ballet 5:8 Chicago
-Emily Dyson – Kaleidoscope Dance Indiana
-Leah Slavens – Suzanne Farrell Ballet
-Claire White – Alabama Ballet
Plus many many more in companies all over the country.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has not played a role in our success, it is hard work and knowledge of our industry.

This ballet studio is an amazing place to pass down the love of classical ballet. The opportunities to perform are outstanding, the mentorship is beautiful. As a parent, I appreciate the focus on classical ballet as a foundation for any other dance form (or athletic pursuit). I also appreciate that modesty is considered when selecting music and costumes. I highly recommend the Ballet Center of Houston!
