Meet Vilho Aatola of Angleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vilho Aatola

Hi Vilho, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a 15-year-old boy from Finland, and my journey in motorsport began when I hopped into a tandem kart at just 3 years old. I got my own kart at 8, and since then, I’ve been dreaming of a career in motorsports. My dad, Tommi, was my mechanic during my first years, which brought us incredibly close. My mom, Anne, has also been deeply involved, cheering me on, preparing meals for race days, and helping with fitness training. My younger brother, Voitto, has joined us on many race trips. From the beginning, this has been a passion shared by our whole family.

It was clear early on that I had a natural talent for racing. We’ve never been the wealthiest family, so I haven’t always had the best gear and equipment. However, I believe this has helped me grow as a driver by teaching me how to adapt and make the most of what I have. I started achieving success in races across Finland, even winning several national championships. We eventually moved on to European karting, and in 2024, during my rookie season, I placed third in the Central European Rotax Max -series, Senior Max -class.

In the summer of 2024, I applied for the Indy Junior Finland-USA Academy, which aims to identify and support a talented young Finnish driver on their journey through the IndyCar ladder system in the U.S. I was selected and, in November 2024, traveled to MSR Houston to test a USF Juniors car with DEForce Racing, a highly successful team. During the two-day test, I received positive feedback from team owners David and Ernesto Martinez.

My journey in the US is just beginning, and I’m excited about the opportunities it could bring. Coming from a background where my family’s resources wouldn’t have allowed for such a path, I’m deeply grateful for the support of everyone who sees my potential and wants to help me achieve my dream of becoming a professional racing driver.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has definitely not been smooth, but it has been supported by the incredible people around me—my family, teams, sponsors, and other supporters.

As I mentioned earlier, my family doesn’t have the financial resources that many others in motorsport do. Because of this, we’ve had to stretch every resource to its limit. We’ve used tires until they were completely worn out, welded chassis back together, patched up racing suits and gloves, used the same helmet for multiple seasons, lived in our van during race trips, and done as much as possible ourselves. This has slowed our progress at times, but it has also taught us a lot. My parents have worked tirelessly to secure the support I need to continue my journey.

After each season, there’s never been a guarantee that I could continue racing the following year. Motorsport and driving are my passion—I could live at the track and race every day. But this sport isn’t that simple. Every race and test day comes with significant costs, especially as we’ve transitioned to competing abroad and operating at a more professional level.

Many of my competitors, particularly those from abroad, come from wealthy families. They often have access to full professional support teams even at a young age in karting—managers, driving coaches, fitness trainers, nutritionists, masseuses, mechanics, and more. By comparison, we’ve done much of this ourselves. My mom has coached me in fitness at home, outdoors, and at the local gym. I’ve taken personal responsibility for my sleep, nutrition, and overall well-being. While we’ve been able to bring a mechanic along, I’ve often assisted with tasks like mounting tires and cleaning the car. Of course, as I transition to formula cars, this level of involvement is no longer possible.

I would say that in some ways, I’ve been an underdog. But I’ve compensated for this with a professional attitude, a strong work ethic, Finnish perseverance, and sheer determination.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a racing driver with a dream of making a professional career in the top levels of motorsport. I’ve been competing in karting for 8 years, and my family and I have approached it with a clear and goal-oriented mindset from the very beginning. Each season, we’ve set specific targets and worked steadily toward them. We haven’t rushed but instead progressed at a pace that aligns with my development. Sometimes, people have thought we’re a bit unconventional because we’ve done things our own way, but it has worked for us, and my family has been an integral part of my journey from the start.

I might not be the most talkative or outgoing person in the paddock, but I’m known for my calm and analytical nature. I approach things methodically rather than rushing headlong into decisions. I listen to instructions carefully and have the ability to put them into practice effectively. Over the years, I’ve improved my communication skills and now receive positive feedback from teams for my ability to discuss driving and car setup in detail. I’m highly competitive, but I’ve also learned to handle setbacks, process them, and move forward. In motorsport, the margins are often razor-thin—fractions of a second—so maintaining mental resilience and preparing thoroughly is essential.

I’ve won Finnish championships through consistent performance. In racing, it’s not always about being on the top step of the podium; finishing and consistently reaching the podium are key. I also excel in wet conditions, which demand precision and adaptability.

I take pride in doing things well—whether it’s training, preparing for races, competing, or even my schoolwork (my GPA is 9.2/10). I’m committed to maintaining a professional attitude in every aspect of my life, which I believe sets me apart from others.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d like American readers to understand that I’m doing something truly exceptional and groundbreaking for a Finnish driver. I am the first Finn ever to compete in the USF Juniors series and begin the IndyCar ladder from the bottom up. While there was a Finnish driver, Tero Palmroth, who participated in the Indy 500 in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Finns have otherwise been a rare sight in motorsport on this continent. There have been more Scandinavian drivers overall, but not many from Finland.
