Meet Vismita, Visak and Shiela Varghese of Bollycurves

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vismita, Visak and Shiela Varghese.

Vismita, Visak and Shiela, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
You are unique. So, then why are you doing the same exercises and poses as everyone else? We had the same question when we were trying to find personalized classes to work around our injuries and abilities. We asked around and found lots of others who had the same frustrations. In 2018, we decided to do something about it and bring our 25+ years of medical experience, yoga and 15+ years of Bollywood dance training. We started with popup classes in our community, and after all the outpouring support we opened up our studio doors in November 2019. We’re not about fancy poses. Instead, we focus on small, and personalized classes to make your daily activities easier.

VISMITA: When I was three, I would tag along with Visak for his dance practices. On the day of his performance, I realized that I wasn’t going to be on stage. I started screaming and threw a fit so loud that the judge said “it’s okay, let her dance.” That’s how my first stage performance started, and I didn’t stop. I have +17 years of experience in Bollywood, Bharatanatyam, Bhangra, Hip-hop, Contemporary, and Jazz. I’m also a Certified Personal Trainer and currently pursuing a Business degree at the University of Houston. Go Coogs!

SHIELA: Growing up I learned Bharatanatyam, and yoga. I currently work as a Nurse Practitioner and a certified yoga teacher. In 2008, a car accident left me with an injured neck and shoulder. I tried treatment but never completely recovered from it. In 2015, I injured my shoulder again and was unable to exercise. I began gaining weight and felt depressed. My plantar fasciitis got worse. There weren’t any fitness studios that could accommodate to my injuries and go at my pace. I wanted to be able to move my shoulder without any pain. After I started yoga again my pain faded away. I lost 22 lbs.

VISAK: By now you know how my sister stole my spotlight. When I saw the change, my mom experienced doing Yoga. I knew that there were many others that would benefit from our meaningful experience. With our passion to bring something different, we created a workout based on the foundation of classical dance, western-fusion, cinematic, hip-hop, jazz, ballet and yoga. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, adult or child, there is a class for everyone.

Has it been a smooth road?
Every vision has a struggle but in our peripheral was our community making this vision whole. Our community, family, and friends have always supported us, from pop up classes to opening our doors. Even during COVID-19, we’ve received an out pour of love.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We offer: Bollywood Cardio, Functional Yoga, Bhangra, Bharatnatyam & Bollywood dance classes, Wedding Choreography, Bollywood dance classes for adults, and Mommy and me.

What set us apart, is our personalization: The biggest setback one can face is fear. We all have it. When our clients leave, they mention the comfortability and confidence they felt. They walk in with baggage/fear but walk out with empowerment. Our classes are personalized, so you can feel comfortable to go at your pace without feeling left out. We also keep the classes small to go work around your injuries and abilities.

During COVID -19, we were the only Bollywood dance studio to convert our group classes into private one-on-one sessions at no additional cost for our customers.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
