Hi Viv Kay, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I was in the middle of an extremely difficult period of my life 7 years ago (a divorce) when I decided to take the risk and pursue a career I had been interested in for quite a while- real estate. I found myself starting all over again- and alone. I was truly grateful to obtain a position as a real estate assistant to a group of investors when I had zero experience in the industry. I recall my very first mentor advising me that if I just focused on business, I wouldn’t have to deal with the emotional turmoil I was experiencing. I took her advice and within a few months, I became a licensed agent. I later moved onto other brokerages, collecting experience and knowledge at every opportunity, My goal since my first days as an assistant was to eventually become a broker, which I finally achieved last year. I am now the designated broker of my own brand, Kay & Co. Now that I have accomplished that, my focus is on establishing my brand while setting new career goals, including community involvement, because I believe that having a purpose, connecting with people, and continually growing is necessary when it comes to maintaining happiness.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been anything but a smooth road….I would say the road from where I started to where I am now has been full of unexpected twists and I was forced to adapt with as much optimism as possible. One of my major challenges was the 4 year period during which I worked on my psychology degree full time, worked full time, and gave birth to my three children. I had plans to attend grad school and become a psychiatrist or criminal profiler, but life led me into the world of business and I suddenly found myself in the insurance industry. Another significant challenge that forced me to transform was my divorce, during which I decided to enter the world of real estate as a newly single mother. I like to say that when life casts stones at you, you can choose to either be crushed beneath them, or you can pick them up and build a mountain.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kay & Co.?
I am a real estate broker located in Houston. After many years of working for other brokers, I finally achieved my goal of becoming a broker and founded Kay & Co. In 2020. My expertise is in contracts and negotiations, and my clients remember me for my professionalism and direct and honest communication. I think what sets me apart professionally is my ability to calmly solve any crisis. I am a member of many real estate associations, including the Women’s Council of Realtors, Texas Realtors, and the Asian American Real Estate Association. I am also currently a member of the Houston Association of Realtors’ Political Affairs Advisory Group. Currently, my brokerage specializes in residential real estate, but I see it expanding into commercial real estate and development in the near future. I am most proud of the quality of service I can provide to my clients- they know they can trust me.
